Senior Entomology Technician Position Number: 01713-6146 | Location: Augusta Area | Position Type: Permanent Full Time, Year-Round | Class Code: 9405 | Grade: 17 | Salary: $19.57–$26.98 per hour (includes 7.5% salary adjustment) | Opening Date: June 16, 2026 | Closing Date: July 2, 2026 Position Summary The Maine Forest Service – Forest Health and Monitoring Division seeks a Senior Entomology Technician to conduct technical services involving detection, evaluation, and impact assessment of forest health issues, including insects, diseases, and abiotic factors in both field and laboratory settings. Key Responsibilities Perform forest health evaluations and field studies to determine causes, extent, and severity of damages; establish temporary and permanent survey plots. Collect data for monitoring and assessment; identify damage and environmental impacts. Provide diagnostic services and technical advice regarding insect and disease problems to landowners, the public, and other agencies; recommend controls and protection strategies. Conduct inspections and surveys related to state- and federally regulated pests to prevent introduction or spread of foreign or quarantined pests. Collect, process, document, and appropriately store, analyze, and report on field samples to determine damage agents using specialized entomology and pathology techniques. Collaborate with universities, state, and federal agencies on insect and disease projects; provide information and services to landowners. Maintain records, equipment, and supplies; supervise or act as lead for technical and seasonal personnel assigned to meet project objectives. Minimum Qualifications Four (4) years of training, education, and/or experience in basic technical field or laboratory entomology, pathology, forestry, or related work. At least two (2) years of on-the-job experience in forest inventory analysis and insect identification. Knowledge of integrated pest management, forest and tree ecology, forest health topics, and use of taxonomic keys to identify host plants, insects, and diseases. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and ArcGIS Software Suites. Commercial pesticide applicator license for multiple categories related to position duties. Valid Maine driver’s license. Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication, presentation skills; ability to reach logical conclusions and make sound technical recommendations. Leadership, team-player skills, ability to organize, prioritize, and manage multiple work projects and meet deadlines. Licensing & Certification Pesticides Applicator License issued by the Maine Pesticide Control Board.
