Staff Optometrist

The Optometrist provides comprehensive primary and medical eye care to patients of all ages, diagnoses and manages ocular disease, and delivers specialty services in dry eye, myopia management, and specialty contact lenses. The Optometrist works collaboratively with our clinical support staff, opticians, and practice leadership to deliver an exceptional patient experience across both locations.

Key Responsibilities

• Clinical care. Perform comprehensive eye examinations for pediatric, adult, and senior patients, including refraction, binocular vision assessment, and dilated fundus evaluation.
• Medical eye care. Diagnose, treat, and manage ocular disease and conditions including dry eye disease, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, ocular allergy, and anterior segment disease; prescribe medications within the scope of Virginia licensure.
• Specialty services. Deliver care within our dry eye clinic, myopia management program, and specialty contact lens service, including fitting scleral, hybrid, and Ortho-K lenses. Training on our in-office technology is provided.
• Diagnostics. Order, perform, and interpret diagnostic testing such as OCT, visual fields, retinal imaging, and dry eye diagnostics.
• Patient education. Educate patients on their findings, treatment options, and preventative care in a clear and personal way; recommend appropriate eyewear, contact lens, and treatment solutions.
• Co-management. Coordinate care with ophthalmologists, primary care physicians, and other specialists; provide pre- and post-operative co-management for cataract and refractive surgery patients.
• Documentation. Maintain accurate, timely, and complete electronic health records and clinical documentation in accordance with HIPAA and practice standards.
• Team collaboration. Work with the practice’s clinical technicians, opticians, and office managers to keep the schedule running smoothly and the patient experience seamless; participate in team meetings and practice improvement initiatives.
• Professional growth. Maintain licensure and continuing education requirements and stay current with advancements in medical optometry and specialty care.

Qualifications

Required

• Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree from an accredited school or college of optometry
• Active license to practice optometry in the Commonwealth of Virginia, including TPA certification, or eligibility to obtain licensure prior to start date
• Genuine interest in medical optometry and specialty services, with a desire to grow clinical skills in dry eye, myopia management, and specialty lenses
• Excellent communication skills and a warm, patient-centered chairside manner
• Strong clinical judgment, attention to detail, and a collaborative approach to working with staff
• Ability to work across both Alexandria locations

Preferred (not required)

• Residency training or clinical experience in ocular disease, cornea and contact lenses, or pediatrics
• Experience with scleral or Ortho-K lens fitting, or with IPL and radiofrequency dry eye treatments
• Familiarity with electronic health records and modern diagnostic instrumentation
