Diesel Mechanic

Diagnose, adjust, repair, or overhaul buses and trucks, or maintain and repair any type of diesel or gasoline engines.

Essential Functions:

• Inspect brake systems, steering mechanisms, wheel bearings, and other important parts to ensure that they are in proper operating condition.
• Use handtools such as screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, pressure gauges, and precision instruments, as well as power tools such as pneumatic wrenches, lathes, welding equipment, and jacks and hoists.
• Adjust and reline brakes, align wheels, tighten bolts and screws, and reassemble equipment.
• Examine and adjust protective guards, loose bolts, and specified safety devices.
• Fuel buses and other school vehicles.
• Perform routine maintenance such as changing oil, checking batteries, and lubricating equipment and machinery.
• Test drive trucks, buses, and other vehicles to diagnose malfunctions or to ensure that they are working properly.
• Raise trucks, buses, and heavy parts or equipment using hydraulic jacks or hoists.
• Attach test instruments to equipment, and read dials and gauges to diagnose malfunctions.
• Rebuild gas or diesel engines.
• Inspect and verify dimensions and clearances of parts to ensure conformance to factory specifications.
• Inspect, test, and listen to defective equipment to diagnose malfunctions, using test instruments such as handheld computers, chassis charts, and pressure gauges.
• Recondition and replace parts, pistons, bearings, gears, and valves.
• Rewire ignition systems, lights, and instrument panels.
• Specialize in repairing and maintaining parts of the engine, such as fuel injection systems.
• Inspect, repair, and maintain automotive and mechanical equipment and machinery such as pumps and compressors.
• Install or repair accessories.
• Disassemble and overhaul internal combustion engines, pumps, generators, transmissions, clutches, and differential units.
• Diagnose and repair vehicle heating and cooling systems.
• Repair or adjust seats, doors, or windows.
• Adjust or repair computer controlled exhaust emissions devices.
• Maintain or repair vehicles with alternative fuel systems.
• Serve as district bus driver on routes as needed.
• Weld and fabricate metal as required.
• Perform painting and minor body work as required.
• Maintain/repair the following systems: a. Exhaust systems b. Electrical systems c. Safety equipment d. Radio and video systems e. Heat/A-C systems
• Perform tire repairs including mounting new tires.

Skills & Abilities:

• Education: Evidence of training in diesel mechanics (such as technical school certificate or other training evidence). High school diploma or equivalent, required.
• Experience: Previous experience as a gas and diesel mechanic preferred.
• Computer Skills: Shall be able to demonstrate an acceptable level of proficiency with computers and programs associated with the position.
• Certifications & Licenses: Diesel engine certification preferred.
• Other Requirements: Valid AR Commercial Driver's License with AR School Bus Passenger Endorsement and Air Brakes Endorsement. Successful completion of pre-employment background checks. Appropriate personal and professional conduct at all times while around students and other staff members. Up to date physical examination and DOT drug screening on file.

Work Environment: The work environment for this position is generally in a garage/shop setting with both inside and outside work. The noise level is moderate to high in most situations. Some exposure to extreme heat or cold may be encountered depending on the job assignment and the season of the year.
