HR Specialist

JOB SUMMARY

The HR Specialist is primarily responsible for full-cycle recruitment and hiring activities, including candidate sourcing, employment offers, pre-employment screening, and onboarding. This position partners closely with hiring managers to identify staffing needs, develop recruiting strategies, and attract qualified candidates while delivering an exceptional candidate experience.

In addition to recruiting responsibilities, the HR Specialist supports personnel transactions, record management, and HR compliance activities. This position serves as a trusted resource to managers and employees by providing guidance on recruiting, interviewing, hiring, and employment practices while ensuring compliance with company policies and applicable employment laws.

Success in this role requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, sound judgment, confidentiality, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

This position is based in Anchorage, Alaska .

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Two (2) years of administrative, customer service, office support, recruiting, human resources, or related professional experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and Teams.
• Strong organizational, time management, and prioritization skills.
• Excellent interpersonal, customer service, verbal, and written communication skills.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with professionalism and discretion.
• Ability to work independently while effectively collaborating with individuals at all levels of the organization.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a dynamic work environment.
• Must be able to pass the company’s pre-employment process including a criminal background check, drug test, and basic physical.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field.
• Experience utilizing applicant tracking systems (ATS), HRIS platforms, and electronic personnel record systems.
• Working knowledge of employment laws, regulations, and related employment practices.
• Professional Human Resources certification (PHR, SHRM-CP, or similar).
• Experience supporting multi-site or geographically dispersed workforces.
• Experience facilitating onboarding or employee orientation programs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Recruiting & Pre-Employment Process

• Manage the full-cycle recruitment process for assigned positions.
• Create and maintain job requisitions within the company's Applicant Tracking System (ATS) and ensure postings are accurately advertised through appropriate sourcing channels.
• Develop and implement sourcing strategies to attract qualified candidates utilizing job boards, social media platforms, referral programs, educational institutions, military partnerships, community organizations, and networking opportunities.
• Review applications and resumes, conduct preliminary candidate screenings, coordinate interviews, and facilitate communication between candidates and hiring managers.
• Partner with hiring managers to identify staffing needs, establish candidate qualifications, and develop effective recruiting strategies.
• Provide guidance and support to managers regarding interviewing techniques, candidate evaluation, selection processes, and hiring best practices.
• Prepare, extend, and coordinate verbal and written employment offers in partnership with hiring managers.
• Coordinate pre-employment processes, including background checks, drug testing, physical examinations, employment eligibility verification, and other required screenings.
• Ensure a positive candidate experience through timely communication, professionalism, and consistent follow-up throughout the hiring process.
• Participate in recruiting events, job fairs, career expos, and community outreach initiatives to promote employment opportunities and strengthen the company's employment brand.
• Track recruiting metrics and provide regular updates on staffing progress, candidate pipelines, and recruitment challenges.

Onboarding & Employee Lifecycle Administration

• Facilitate new hire orientation and onboarding activities to ensure a successful transition into the organization.
• Process and maintain accurate employee records and personnel transactions, including hires, transfers, promotions, pay changes, status changes, and separations.
• Ensure personnel files, electronic records, and HR systems are maintained in accordance with company standards and regulatory requirements.
• Assist employees and managers with routine HR questions and employment-related processes.

Compliance & HR Operations

• Support compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and company policies.
• Conduct or assist with audits and compliance reviews, including I-9 audits, personnel file audits, EEO reporting, payroll audits, and other workforce compliance initiatives.
• Maintain accurate records and documentation to support reporting, audits, and regulatory requirements.
• Assist in preparing reports, workforce data, and HR metrics as requested.
• Identify opportunities to improve recruiting, onboarding, and HR administrative processes and recommend solutions that enhance efficiency and service delivery.

General HR Support

• Serve as a professional representative of the Human Resources department and contribute to a positive workplace culture.
• Provide backup support for other Human Resources functions as needed.
• Participate in special projects, initiatives, and continuous improvement efforts.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position is primarily performed in a professional office environment and requires extensive use of computers, telephones, and other standard office equipment. The HR Specialist regularly interacts with applicants, employees, managers, and external partners in person, by phone, and through electronic communications. Occasional travel may be required to support recruiting activities, onboarding, training, job fairs, or other HR initiatives.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to sit, speak, hear, and use hands and fingers to operate office equipment. The employee may occasionally stand, walk, bend, reach, and lift or carry items weighing up to 20 pounds. The ability to read printed materials and computer screens and communicate effectively with others is required.
