Probation Officer - Probate Court

General Statement of Duties:
To serve the community through case management of adjudicated and non-adjudicated youth that are under the jurisdiction of the Juvenile Court
. The objective of this position is to investigate, screen, and determine the placement and rehabilitation needs of youth and families during the investigatory stage of their court involvement and make recommendations for the disposition of delinquency matters.
Conducts relevant assessments, and submits referrals to community agencies.
Completes required paperwork such as financial statements, consent release, and intake forms needed to advance court proceedings.
Attends and partakes in court proceedings to provide necessary recommendations.
Supervision Received
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Probate/Juvenile Court Director or designee.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
An employee this class may be called upon to do any or all of the following: These examples do not include all of the tasks which an employee may be expected to perform.
•Juvenile Screening & Case Service Planning
o
Conducts assessments to identify areas of need for clients, such as minors, at-risk youth, juveniles, and their families or guardians.
o
Meet in fact-to-face visits with youth and their family regularly.
o
Connect juveniles and families to identified resources through needs assessments.
o
Familiarity with S.M.A.R.T. goals.
Develop case plans.
o
Adequate knowledge of trauma and the physiological awareness of juvenile development.
•Determine Case Evaluation and Information for the Court
o
Conduct investigations into any environmental domain.
o
Completes written reports of the juveniles' case history, and needs, identifies available resources, and the likelihood of maintaining in the community.
o
Generates court documents to assist jurists in courtroom decision-making, including but not limited to; dispositional reports, review hearing reports, ex-parte requests, and probation violation motions.
o
Perform drug screenings as deemed necessary.
•Case File Management
o
Maintains detailed/accurate case notes in youth center while maintaining court files.
o
Maintains documentation for state reporting, intensive home therapy, monthly caseload with contacts, and visits about child care fund.
•Court Liaison
o
Avail themselves to school, community members, parents, victims, and other youth serving organizations regarding juvenile court procedure and vision.
o
Testify in court hearings.
o
Attend community partnership meetings to stay current on local resources and services offered within the Lenawee area.
o
Maintain positive and healthy working relationships with community partners.
•Communication
o
Will speak and prepare reports that are clear and concise.
o
Will be able to provide and accept information from colleagues, community members, and experts in the field in a professional manner.
•Perform related work as required.
Desirable Education, Experience and/or Qualifications
An employee in this class, upon appointment should have the equivalent of the following training, qualifications and/or experience.
•Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice, Social Work or Psychology.
•Michigan Supreme Court Administrative Order 1985-5 requires a Juvenile [Court] Probation Officer/Caseworker to complete the Michigan Judicial Institute (MJI) Certification training within two (2) years of employment.
•Experience in case evaluation and individualized case service planning.
•Qualifications and/or trainings in de-escalation.
•Must have a valid Michigan driver's license.
•Computer skills are necessary to effectively utilize word processing, spreadsheet and accounting software systems and the ability to be trained on a specific software program.
•Attend pertinent training and conferences.
•Knowledge of juvenile law.
•Knowledge of court procedures and restorative justice practices.
•Skill in managing a caseload.
•Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
•Ability to testify in court.
•Ability to work effectively with the public and with other employees.
Working Conditions and Physical Abilities:
•Work is primarily indoors and requires sitting for extended periods.
•Must be able to lift and carry up to 30 pounds.
•Must be able to hear and speak over the phone and in one-on-one communication needs.
•Must be able to see and notice the needs of others.
•Must be able to enter into client's homes, as such, the employee may encounter challenging clients, unique fragrances, scents and home environments.
•Must be able to work unique working hours, before and after the traditional work day at times.
•Must be able to work in inclement weather.
•Must be able to travel in the community throughout Lenawee County and possibly beyond with their personal vehicle.
•Must be able to deal with hostile and volatile youth and adults.
