Industrial Engine Mechanic

King County's Wastewater Treatment Division is seeking an Industrial Engine Mechanic. Support the safe and reliable operation of the West Point Treatment Plant and multiple offsite facilities by performing skilled maintenance and repair on critical engine systems. In this role, you will provide hands-on support for the operation, maintenance, and reliability of backup generators and the cogeneration system that powers essential wastewater treatment operations. You will apply your technical knowledge to troubleshoot, inspect, maintain, and repair engine-driven equipment, ensuring systems operate efficiently and in compliance with safety standards. As part of Capital Improvement Projects, you may provide input based on field experience to support equipment installation, system upgrades, and plant improvements. You will also coordinate with team members and supervisors to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and on schedule. The Industrial Engine Mechanic plays a critical role in ensuring the reliability and efficiency of wastewater treatment operations by maintaining and repairing a wide variety of engine-driven equipment—including diesel generators, biogas generators, diesel-driven pumps, biogas raw sewage pump engines, and related ancillary systems—both onsite and across a network of offsite pump and regulator stations throughout King County. The position also contributes to meeting COGEN run-time requirements and maintaining clear communication with Seattle City Light (SCL) and other stakeholders as needed. This includes working closely with other craft, operations, and engineering staff to support planned and corrective maintenance activities. In this role, the mechanic applies technical expertise to support preventive maintenance programs and respond to unscheduled corrective work, helping ensure safe and reliable operations. The position may include participation in a rotating standby schedule to respond to emergency situations outside normal working hours. Safety is a top priority. The Industrial Engine Mechanic follows all safety procedures, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), Lockout/Tagout protocols, and safe work practices related to electrical, mechanical, and environmental hazards. This includes compliance with Permit-Required Confined Space entry, hot work permitting, and other applicable safety requirements. Job Duties

• Troubleshoot, repair, maintain, and overhaul engine-driven equipment and generator power systems (up to 13.09 KV), including power generation systems, diesel standby emergency generators, large-bore co-generating engines, engine-driven pumps, and all related ancillary equipment, including the COGEN.
• Maintain accurate records of emission testing and tuning for SI co-generation and pump engine equipment as required.
• Maintain records of fuel tank testing, permit inspections, and certifications for all aboveground and underground fuel tanks as required by the DOE.
• Inspect and test equipment to ensure proper operation, safety compliance, and adherence to established maintenance standards.
• Organize and maintain accurate equipment history records to support cost-effective and efficient work practices.
• Collaborate with other trades and operations staff as needed to support plant and offsite maintenance activities.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications You Must Bring:

• Ability to troubleshoot, repair, maintain, and overhaul engine-driven equipment, including diesel and biogas generators, engine-driven pumps, and related ancillary systems.
• Knowledge of mechanical systems, electrical controls (up to 13.09 KV), and instrumentation used in industrial engine and cogeneration operations
• Ability to interpret technical manuals, schematics, and equipment history records to perform accurate maintenance and repairs.
• Commitment to safe work practices, including Lockout/Tagout procedures, confined space entry, and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Ability to organize, document, and maintain accurate maintenance records for equipment, emissions, and fuel systems.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with trades, operations staff, and supervisors.

Required Licenses:

• Valid Washington State Driver's License

Preferred Qualifications:

• Advanced Knowledge and hands on experience with all aspects of maintenance, overhaul, repair and testing of diesel and/or multi fuel engines.
• Factory training in (CAT, Cummins, Waukesha) engines etc.
• Boom truck operator certification.
• UST operator certification
• CDL certification (Class B CDL with Tanker (N) and Hazardous Materials (H) endorsements)

• Work Schedule: This full-time position works a 40-hour work week, Monday - Friday. This position is covered under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is overtime eligible.
• Union Representation: This position is represented by S.E.I.U. 925 (Wastewater Treatment Division)
• Physical Requirement: Incumbents perform field work at a wastewater treatment plant and associated facilities and are required to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, work in confined spaces, use ladders, and there is exposure to hazardous chemicals, noxious odors and high noise levels, and potentially slippery or uneven surfaces. Employees regularly operate heavy machinery, rigging, and power tools. Must be able to safely perform physically demanding tasks for extended periods, including standing, bending, kneeling, and reaching while completing maintenance, repair, and installation work.
