Job Title Harris County Night Crew - Transportation Maintenance Tech I, II, III (2601456) Position Information TxDOT's Houston District is looking for independent and capable crew members to staff the Harris County Night Crew. Crew members will be filling the exciting role of responding to overnight emergencies throughout the county, working to keep roadways safe and open for the traveling public. The Harris County Night Crew will also ensure that overnight maintenance projects are properly delivered to keep Houston roads open. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details. Performs moderately complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: maintenance contract and/or material and process inspections; roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor. Performs highly complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: contract maintenance and/or material and process inspection; roadway maintenance and repair; operates light and heavy equipment; preventative and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor. Assist in identifying, repairing and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; perform basic welding as needed; use or move equipment, tools, materials and products related to these activities. Assist in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assist stranded motorists as required. Assist with traffic control; place and gather cones, warning signs and barricades; flag traffic. Determine placement of traffic control devices and install or move devices. Maintain highways and rights‑of‑way; perform roadway repairs; erect and repair guard rails, highway markers and signs; haul materials and equipment to job sites. Move or pick up litter and roadway debris. Operate light equipment such as a front‑end loader 1¼ cubic yards or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower. Sand or clean bridges and roads, post warning signs, help the public and perform other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills. Assist with inspecting maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications. Perform other job responsibilities as assigned. Essential Duties for Transportation Maintenance Tech I, II, III Identify, repair, and install signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; perform welding; use or move equipment, tools, materials and products. Inspect routine and non‑routine maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications. Identify, analyze, and implement solutions for complex maintenance problems. Inspect traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications, safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. May serve as a work crew project lead ensuring work performed meets project specifications. Conduct tests of highway construction materials, make calculations, and record results. 1. year of experience in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work (Level II)
2. years of experience in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work (Level III)

Education & Certification Valid driver’s license at the time of application. Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver’s License with an "N" endorsement or obtain a CDL "A" license within 120 calendar days from date of employment. Required Knowledge and Skills Methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work. Applicable inspection methods, procedures and techniques. Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance. The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes. Basic mathematical fundamentals. Computer proficiency, applicable programs, applications, and systems. Operating light and heavy highway equipment. Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others. Follow verbal and written instructions. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions Transportation Maintenance Tech I, II, and III: Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32°F or above 100°F for more than one hour. Required to wear protective gear including respirator, hard hat, or other devices. Medium work: lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs. Kneeling – bending legs at the knee to come to a rest on the knee(s). Crouching – bending body downward and forward by bending leg(s) and spine. Walking – moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance or between work sites. Lifting – raising objects from lower to higher position/horizontally to a different position. Talking – expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words. Close visual acuity – work includes visual inspection of small defects or parts. Visual acuity – determine work quality or make general observations of facilities or structures. This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre‑employment physical.
