Role Description The Substance Abuse Counselor is a full-time, on-site role based in Rockville, MD. This position is responsible for conducting individual and group counseling sessions for clients in IOP, aftercare, and other program formats. The counselor develops and updates individualized treatment plans, monitors client progress, and maintains accurate, confidential clinical documentation. Day-to-day responsibilities include completing assessments, coordinating care with other providers, participating in case reviews, and delivering psychoeducational programming focused on recovery and relapse prevention. The counselor also provides ongoing support, crisis intervention when needed, and contributes to a safe, respectful, and culturally sensitive treatment environment. Qualifications Candidates should possess strong skills in Treatment Planning and Case Management, including the ability to design, implement, and adjust individualized care plans. Candidates should possess knowledge and experience in Chemical Dependency and Relapse Prevention, with familiarity in evidence-based practices for substance use disorders. Candidates should possess competencies in Mental Health, including recognizing co-occurring conditions and collaborating with mental health professionals as appropriate. Relevant licensure or certification as a Substance Abuse Counselor or equivalent (e.g., CAC, LCPC, LCSW, or state-recognized credential) is preferred or required, depending on state regulations. Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or a related behavioral health field is highly beneficial. Strong communication, documentation, and active listening skills, with the ability to build trust and maintain professional boundaries. Experience working in outpatient or IOP settings and familiarity with local community resources is an advantage.
