Outreach Services Specialist - Traveling Library Center - 40 Hours

Job Opportunity: Outreach Services Specialist (Mobile Services Department) Job Number: 2026-00128 This is a full‑time, 40‑hour per week position. Daily shift is Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. All shifts are performed at the Service Center in Issaquah, WA. The Outreach Services Specialist delivers library services to seniors and adults with disabilities. Responsibilities include driving mobile library vans, selecting, providing, and lending library materials, offering reader advisory, and maintaining accurate record keeping. The role serves a diverse population across King County, ensuring equitable access to library services. Essential Duties / Major Responsibilities Locate and provide KCLS library materials and reader’s advisory to a patron population that cannot access a local branch. Deliver, check‑in, and check‑out materials at the site using PCs, tablets, or remotely, downloading information after the visit when necessary. Drive the vehicles to various locations within the KCLS service area. Perform circulation routines such as unpacking shipments, checking in materials, handling holds, and other collection circulation/maintenance functions. Perform specialized functions such as magazine processing, database management, filing office materials, etc. Maintain current knowledge of literature, children’s and adult resources, and early literacy and adult practices depending on assignment. Attend system‑wide Children’s Services or Adult Services meetings when available. Support coordinators and librarians in delivering high‑quality programs and instruction for diverse audiences at off‑site locations; partner with staff to identify new outreach opportunities; support evaluation efforts and continuous improvement. Research materials available to the target patron population; research and engage with potential new service sites. Act as lead library staff person during mobile site visits, acting as library liaison with facility staff and patrons; enforce library policies and procedures and rules of conduct off‑site. Education and Experience High school diploma or GED; associate degree or equivalent in library science, research methods, or a related field. Two to four years of experience in library operations, reader’s advisory services, or comparable direct customer service to the public. Alternative combinations of education, experience, and training that provide the required knowledge and skills. Fluency in a language other than English is desirable. Special Requirements Valid Washington driver license with satisfactory driving record. Completion of KCLS driver training within the first three months of employment is required. Physical Demands Frequent use of hands to grasp objects and drive; walking, sitting, reaching, bending, and lifting up to 25 pounds routinely, and occasional lifting up to 55 pounds. Requires ability to pull and push loaded carts. Work Environment Work is outside of a typical office, involving extensive travel, heavy lifting, constant standing, operation of mobile equipment, loading and unloading heavy carts, and interaction with diverse patrons. Exposure to angry or hostile individuals may occur.
