Clinical Research Financial Specialist

The Clinical Research Financial Specialist works within the Brown University Health Office of Cancer Research (BHOCR) under the direction of a Department Research Finance Manager. The role focuses on pre‑ and post‑award research financial management for a portfolio of clinical research studies, including clinical trials, foundation and industry projects, and institutional funding. The Specialist serves as a senior resource, mentors peers, and collaborates with faculty, central offices, and statewide research partners to ensure compliant, efficient management of research funds. Responsibilities Manage the financial aspects of assigned clinical research projects, planning, developing, monitoring, and coordinating departmental administrative activities. Advising faculty and researchers on sponsored research applications and financial management of sponsored and institutional funds. Lead pre‑award activities: study start‑ups, coverage analysis, budget negotiations, agreement executions, and grant application preparation. Oversee post‑award tasks: invoicing to sponsors, tracking payments, updating budgets and coverage analyses, handling budget adjustments, and ensuring timely sponsor reporting. Coordinate with central offices—Research Finance, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Grants and Contracts, Special Funds, and the Clinical Trials Office—to ensure compliance with internal and external regulations. Represent the department at research administration meetings, institutional committees, and work groups. Prepare and submit financial reports, billing reviews, and required documentation to management and regulatory bodies. Provide mentorship and teaching to junior staff and stakeholders on financial practices and institutional policies. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in business administration, finance, or related field, with at least ten (10) years of research administration experience. Extensive experience in academic or research settings, managing federal and non‑federal funding, grant application processes, and compliance with local, federal, hospital, and independent agency regulations. Preferred experience in oncology clinical research. Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to interact effectively with diverse stakeholders including MDs and PhDs. Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Access, Windows) and research access programs.
