Director of Human Resources

Our client, a nonprofit organization in the Akron area, is seeking a hands-on Director of Human Resources to lead its HR function and serve as a strategic partner to the CEO and executive team. This role combines organization-wide people strategy with day-to-day leadership of HR operations. The Director will oversee the HR team, advise managers, strengthen employee engagement, and ensure sound, consistent HR practices across the organization.

Responsibilities

• Lead, coach, and manage the HR team, including setting priorities and supporting professional development.
• Partner with executive leadership on workforce planning, succession planning, organizational change, and talent strategy.
• Oversee the full employee lifecycle, including recruitment, hiring, onboarding, performance management, recognition, and offboarding.
• Develop and administer compensation and benefits programs, including market benchmarking and retention initiatives.
• Guide managers on employee relations, performance feedback, documentation, and conflict resolution. Lead internal investigations and work with legal counsel when appropriate.
• Maintain the employee handbook, HR policies, and procedures, ensuring compliance with federal and Ohio employment laws and applicable funding requirements.
• Oversee benefits administration, leave management, accommodations, and workers’ compensation matters.
• Lead the HRIS and related systems, maintain accurate employee data, and identify opportunities to improve HR processes and reporting.
• Establish and track HR measures such as turnover, time to fill, engagement, and training completion. Present workforce updates and recommendations to the CEO and Board.
• Partner with leaders across the organization to build trust in HR and support a positive, accountable workplace culture.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field required; master’s degree preferred.
• At least 10 years of progressive human resources management experience, including a minimum of five years in an HR leadership role.
• Experience developing or administering compensation, benefits, and performance management programs.
• Strong working knowledge of federal and Ohio employment laws.
• Experience administering an HRIS and using HR data to inform decisions.
• SHRM-SCP, SHRM-CP, SPHR, or PHR certification, or the ability to obtain certification within 12 months of hire.
• Strong communication, coaching, problem-solving, and change management skills, along with sound judgment in handling confidential matters.

HR leadership experience in a nonprofit, human services, or federally funded organization is preferred, as is experience with grant-related personnel requirements, HR system improvements, and Board reporting.

This is a hybrid role that will require traveling to another local site location once/month.

Pay: $80,000.00 - $83,000.00 per year
