Special Investigator

Job Description The Department of Industrial Relations seeks a Special Investigator to join the Office of the Director Legal Unit (OD Legal) in Oakland. The investigator supports attorneys by researching and investigating workers' compensation cases related to the Uninsured Employers Benefits Trust Fund (UEBTF), the Subsequent Injuries Benefits Trust Fund (SIBTF), and the Death Without Dependents Fund (DWD). The investigator may also conduct investigations related to civil litigation, public works coverage issues, administrative enforcement proceedings on employee/independent contractor classification issues (AB 5/AB 2257), and other projects within the Legal Unit. Responsibilities Conduct investigations and research using online databases and resources such as Clear, Accurint, Lexis, Westlaw, and other sources. Request and review public records, locate witnesses, and conduct telephone interviews. Review legal documents, gather documentary evidence, and prepare correspondence, subpoenas, discovery forms, and simple legal pleadings. Prepare detailed written reports summarizing findings, analysis, conclusions, and recommendations. Perform all investigative work from the office; no field work is required. Qualifications Minimum qualification education includes a major in criminal justice, law enforcement, criminology, administration of justice, police science, business administration, or a related field. Relevant experience related to the minimum qualifications as outlined in the Classification Specification.
