School Crossing Guard

Safely support, care for, and manage students at assigned crossing guard sites within the district and other transportation operations while following CDE, CDL and district policies and any other relevant state or federal regulations. This position is required to support varying and directly assigned district/community site locations and substitute for district operations as needed. This position will be required to safely perform job duties involving all district sites as assigned to support department and district operations and emergency district needs during all hours of the day and all types of weather/traffic conditions as needed. Learn and maintain knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations and Thompson Schools District policies and procedures. Provide any needed support to the department and district in emergency situations.

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

• Safely support, assist and manage students, district staff, and parent/guardians at district/community site locations while following CDE, CDL, District policies, and any other relevant state or federal regulations.
• Ensure the safety and well-being of students, district staff, and parent/guardians at all times during district operations. This includes but is not limited to, district schools/sites, student crossings, emergency operations, and when on-site at the transportation center, and any other locations that could be required during emergency operations. Report all safety equipment defects and ensure equipment is in compliance.
• Monitor students on site to ensure district procedures and regulations are maintained at all times during operation.
• Be safety oriented with the understanding of how job duties relate to student, staff, and community safety.
• Communicate with district staff, including but not limited to, teachers, paraprofessionals and security monitors during operations.
• Work with Transportation Managers to address student behavior issues and concerns with parents/guardians and district staff, including possible meetings.
• Learn, maintain, and continually update knowledge of state and federal transportation laws and regulations and Thompson Schools District policies and procedures.
• Learn, maintain, and continually update knowledge of district sites, and other district operations destinations and locations.
• Learn, maintain, and continually update knowledge of student behavior management techniques.
• Assist in monitoring and responding to student's physical, medical or emotional needs. Uphold all duties and requirements as a mandatory reporter for TSD.
• Update any transportation data/forms as needed.
• Report student issues, accidents, incidents, and unsafe conditions/hazards to dispatch or supervisor.
• Maintain strict confidentiality and professional boundaries at all times.
• Attend training classes, first aid, and in-service/district professional development meetings as required by the district.
• Conduct emergency evacuations, district reunification or any other emergency operations as needed.
• Maintain reports, records, and written documentation as required or requested by supervisor and/or district staff.
• Work in cooperation with district staff.
• Assist with student pedestrian safety training at designated school sites.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, skills, and ability:

Supervision/technical responsibility: This job has no supervisory responsibilities. Acts a resource for proper student crossing safety procedures, including training, demonstrating, and answering questions. Duties and location are assigned by department dispatch office and department leadership. This position requires application of position knowledge to efficiently anticipate gaps in traffic flow when students may be safely crossed with or without aid of available traffic control devices and follow basic traffic guidelines. Work is guided by Thompson School District policies and procedures. Decision making requires collaboration with district staff, department staff, students and district parent/guardians/community members.

Education and training: High school diploma or equivalent preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience: 0 – 2 years experience in supervision and care of children/adolescents is preferred.

Certificates, licenses, & registrations: 2 Certifications, licenses, and registrations as required by the department/district.

Safety to self and others:

• In order to safely perform this position, you must familiarize yourself with the safety rules of your job and participate in all safety training provided by your building. You must wear personal protective equipment whenever required, ask for assistance if the task requires more than one person and, if you're unsure how to perform a task safely, stop and ask your supervisor for instruction before continuing.
• All employees of the district are responsible for maintaining a safe and healthy workplace and ensuring that safety precautions and practices are followed.
• We expect you to immediately report any unsafe working conditions or safety problems to your supervisor. Until corrective action is taken, be sure that the area or condition is restricted and that cautionary devices, i.e., cones, temporary fencing, floor signs, etc. are in place so that others are not affected or injured.
