AS400 RPG Programmer with Systems Administrator

Looking for an RPG programmer with Systems Administrator knowledge on the IBM AS/400 (IBM i) platform. On-call duties are shared among the AS/400 staff and described as very light.




The System Administrator duties are mostly watching the system for errors, processing the daily backup tapes, and auditing the nightly jobs. There may be the occasional third-party software and AS400 PTF updates. They have new IBM AS400 systems: Power 10 & Power 11 which we use the iTera software to replicate the data between systems. The software here is home grown over many years.

List of the skill sets that we are looking for in the position:

• Maintain and install the hardware and software needed on two IBM AS400 I systems: POWER 10 & 11
• Perform audits on the nightly scheduled jobs, tape backups, and system status.
• Participate in the rotating on-call daily duties between all AS400 staff for the user base.
• Perform needed programming projects

We are currently a small shop, so we do it all, from the daily operations to programming projects. Most importantly we need some one that has AS400 Administrative and Operations experience. We hope to find a candidate that can program in the RPG programming language (any version of RPG, we have it all). Since this position is a backup for me, I will list my areas of daily involvement. We have a wide variety of old and new technology here which the network team and the AS400 team share the responsibility maintaining. Having the ability to multitask is very beneficial skill to have.

Other skills would include: Microsoft office especially Excel, some networking knowledge just so they could understand working with network server folder data, FTP processes, IFS folders on the AS400, IBM Navigator, Access Client Solution setups for user workstations, T L Ashford's bar code software.

We have these third-party software packages: TL Ashford, DRV Spool Flex, Precisely's iTera Data Replication, Rocket Aldon, ProData's DBU RDB, Pathfinder's Hawkeye, Gumbo's SpoolMail, Easy400 MMAIL, inFORM Decisions' FMG iDocs, Help System's SEQUEL, GLOBAL account software package, FAXCOM, Staylinked (handheld software), and SPEED DIGITAL Package.

Currently done by their IT developer:
As the system administrator I handle the:

• Updates to the third-party software packages
• Updates to the AS400 system
• Updates to the AS400's HMC PC controller system
• Preform any data restores needed
• Maintain the two AS400's tape library devices
• Maintain the BRMS tape library systems
• Maintain the iTera data replication software along with a paid monitor service
• Update the third-party billing invoices history for management

I audit perform these audits daily:

• Check for system problem log for things like disk failures where I would contact IBM for a replacement.
• If a system problem exists, I would sign on to Service Tools and document the error.
• Audit the system console messages looking for errors from the night before. I would then research and find a solution with the staff.
• Audit the: System Status, System backup jobs, and the nightly scheduled jobs. If there are any errors, I research, document, and find a solution.
• Audit the system for disabled user profiles
• Audit the Precisely iTera Data Replicating software
• Keep the AS400 tapes rotated each week and manage the month end backups storage inventory

I share the weekly on-call duties:

• Run required daily jobs
• Load and unload the daily sales process for the Auction
• Answer phone & email problem request: job & printer errors, etc.
• Monitor console messages
• Work with co-workers to solve any third-party vendor communication problems.

Work on currently assigned projects:

• Ford system changes
• New department manager request for changes
• I am currently prepping to install a new AS400 Power 11 system with our IBM VAR. I will be preforming multiple full system backups and preforming the IBM preparational procedures required for an Operating System upgrade to V7R5. All third-party software much be verified to work with V4R5 and preform any third-party software upgrades needed.
