Scale Attendant

The Scale Attendant assists customers hauling residential and specific types of commercial waste to SPSA transfer stations or directly to the landfill. Greets customers to verify residency, record visits, weigh vehicles, and screen for unauthorized waste. Operates industrial scale recording device to record inbound and outbound truck weights to determine tonnage of waste disposed. Collects payments by credit card or commercial account.

Work is performed under the supervision of the Scale Attendant Supervisor with important day-to-day input provided by the supervisor of the worksite (typically a Transfer Station Supervisor). Full-time Scale Attendants work rotating schedules across all SPSA scale house locations.

• Greets customers to verify residency, record visits, weigh vehicles, and screen for unauthorized waste. Informs customers of proper disposal policies and procedures. - 50%
• Processes customer credit card transactions and ensures balances are correct at the end of each shift. - 10%
• Receives customer phone calls and provides directions and information in between assisting in person customers in an efficient, professional, and friendly manner. - 30%
• Ensures scales and recording devices are operating properly. - 10%

Typical Qualifications

Experience & Education

• Required Education - High school diploma or the equivalent required.
• Required Experience - One year of demonstrated experience in customer service, data entry, scale operation, and cashiering.
• Required Licenses - Valid driver's license or reliable transportation required to work across SPSA scale house locations.

An equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered.

• Communicate effectively with customers in-person and by phone.
• Learn and accurately operate SPSA scale facilities.

Supplemental Information

Working Conditions

This position will work in the scale house office at an open window area where tractor trailers come and go by in close proximity throughout the entire shift. Depending on wind direction, this activity can bring dust and exhaust fumes in through the open window of the scale house. During seasons of extreme heat and extreme cold, it can be difficult to regulate the temperature inside the scale house.

Machines, Tools & Equipment

This position will require you to regularly use a computer, telephone, credit card processing equipment, and basic office equipment. May use a long-handled grabber-reacher tool to exchange credit card and receipts with the driver. Uses cleaning equipment including brooms, mops, and surface cleaners to do general cleaning in the scale house.

Physical & Mental Requirements

• Read vehicle license plates, customer drivers licenses, and computer monitor in varying daylight and evening conditions.
• Perform computerized data entry accurately and rapidly.
• Sit, stand and reach at a customer window for eight hours in relatively small spaces.
• Communicate verbally with customers, the public, peers, and supervisors in a clear and concise manner.
• Interact with the public in a pleasant, considerate, and efficient manner under sometimes adverse conditions.
• Shift focus as needed to be responsive to tasks or requests requiring immediate attention or prioritization.
• Answer inquiries from phone calls or transfer to proper extension, while assisting in-person customers.
• Process credit card transactions accurately and ensure balances are correct at the end of each shift.
• Sweep, mop, clean countertop surfaces, windows, and empty waste baskets each shift in the scale house.
• Adapt to daily job duties that may vary based on location assigned.
• Thrive in a fast-paced environment, inherent to an in-person customer service role, to meet deadlines, as needed.
