Salem University’s School of Nursing is seeking qualified, student-centered nursing professionals to serve as Adjunct Clinical Nursing Faculty in the Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) program.

The Adjunct Clinical Nursing Faculty member provides clinical instruction, supervision, evaluation, and mentorship to pre-licensure nursing students in assigned clinical, laboratory, and simulation environments. This position is responsible for promoting safe patient care, developing students’ clinical judgment and technical competencies, and evaluating student performance in accordance with established course objectives and School of Nursing expectations.

Clinical faculty collaborate with course coordinators, nursing leadership, and clinical partners to provide high-quality, evidence-based learning experiences and ensure adherence to University requirements, clinical affiliate expectations, applicable West Virginia Board of Nursing requirements, and nursing accreditation standards.

The successful candidate will demonstrate current clinical competence, effective teaching and communication skills, professional nursing practice, and a commitment to preparing students for safe and effective entry into professional nursing practice.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The duties listed below are representative of the responsibilities of this position. Additional duties may be assigned to support institutional priorities.

Clinical Instruction & Supervision

• Provide direct clinical instruction and supervision to ASN students in assigned clinical environments. 
• Supervise students in acute care, long-term care, outpatient, specialty, and other approved clinical settings as assigned. 
• Facilitate clinical learning experiences that align with course objectives, curriculum requirements, and expected student competencies. 
• Conduct pre-clinical and post-clinical conferences to reinforce clinical reasoning, nursing concepts, patient safety, and professional practice. 
• Provide hands-on instruction and guidance related to nursing skills, patient assessment, clinical decision-making, documentation, and professional behaviors. 
• Facilitate laboratory instruction, skills check-offs, simulation activities, or other clinical learning experiences as assigned. 
• Maintain appropriate supervision of students and intervene when necessary to protect patient and student safety. 
• Model professional, ethical, evidence-based, and patient-centered nursing practice. 

Student Assessment & Evaluation

• Observe and evaluate student clinical performance using established course and program evaluation criteria. 
• Assess students’ clinical judgment, nursing skills, communication, documentation, professionalism, and ability to provide safe patient care. 
• Complete competency assessments, clinical evaluations, skills validations, and other required student documentation accurately and within established timelines. 
• Provide timely, specific, and constructive feedback regarding student performance. 
• Identify students who are not meeting clinical expectations and promptly communicate concerns to the appropriate course coordinator or nursing leadership. 
• Participate in the development and implementation of student remediation or improvement plans when assigned. 
• Maintain appropriate documentation related to student clinical performance, attendance, competency, and progression. 

Clinical & Simulation Education

• Facilitate assigned skills laboratory and simulation experiences consistent with course and program objectives. 
• Evaluate student competency during nursing skills demonstrations and check-offs. 
• Support students in applying classroom knowledge to clinical practice and simulated patient-care scenarios. 
• Reinforce evidence-based nursing practice, clinical reasoning, prioritization, communication, and patient-safety principles. 
• Maintain current knowledge of nursing practice and incorporate relevant evidence-based practices into clinical instruction. 

Clinical Partner & Program Collaboration

• Collaborate with course coordinators, nursing faculty, clinical facility personnel, and School of Nursing leadership regarding student learning experiences. 
• Establish and maintain professional working relationships with clinical affiliate personnel. 
• Communicate student, scheduling, safety, or clinical-site concerns promptly to appropriate University personnel. 
• Ensure assigned clinical activities align with course objectives, curriculum expectations, and clinical affiliate requirements. 
• Participate in faculty orientation, clinical-site orientation, program meetings, training, and other activities as required for the assignment. 
• Support clinical-site development and continuous quality-improvement initiatives as assigned. 

Compliance & Professional Responsibilities

• Adhere to Salem University and School of Nursing policies and procedures. 
• Maintain compliance with applicable West Virginia Board of Nursing requirements, nursing accreditation standards, and clinical affiliate requirements. 
• Maintain all licenses, certifications, health requirements, immunizations, screenings, and other credentials required for clinical instruction and clinical-site access. 
• Protect the confidentiality of student, patient, and clinical information in accordance with applicable requirements. 
• Demonstrate professional conduct, accountability, cultural humility, and ethical nursing practice. 
• Maintain appropriate professional boundaries with students and clinical partners. 
• Complete required University and School of Nursing training and documentation within established deadlines. 
• Perform other duties as assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited institution. 
• Active, unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license in West Virginia or a multistate license permitting practice in West Virginia. 
• Minimum of two years of recent direct patient-care nursing experience. 
• Current clinical knowledge and demonstrated competence in an area appropriate to assigned clinical instruction. 
• Strong written, verbal, interpersonal, and organizational skills. 
• Ability to meet all University and clinical affiliate requirements for participation in clinical education. 

Preferred Qualifications

• Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or other applicable graduate degree in nursing. 
• Previous nursing education or clinical teaching experience. 
• Previous experience serving as a preceptor, clinical educator, or mentor to nursing students or newly licensed nurses. 
• Experience with nursing simulation and skills laboratory instruction. 
• Experience with competency assessment and skills validation. 
• Experience teaching pre-licensure nursing students. 
• Familiarity with nursing education standards and accreditation requirements.

• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during clinical instruction. 
• Ability to perform and demonstrate nursing skills and patient-care activities appropriate to assigned clinical experiences. 
• Ability to bend, reach, stoop, and move throughout patient-care and clinical environments. 
• Ability to assist with or demonstrate patient positioning, mobility, and other nursing-care activities as required for instruction. 
• Ability to respond promptly to student or patient-safety concerns within the clinical environment. 
• Ability to communicate effectively in person and through electronic communication systems. 
• Ability to travel to assigned clinical locations as required.

Work Environment

This position requires in-person instruction at Salem University and/or assigned clinical affiliate locations.

Work may be performed in hospitals, long-term care facilities, outpatient settings, simulation laboratories, nursing skills laboratories, and other approved clinical environments.

Clinical assignments may occur during daytime, evening, or weekend hours based on course schedules, clinical-site availability, and program needs. Adjunct assignments are based on instructional and clinical needs and are not guaranteed from one academic term to another.
