Histology Trainee

Job Summary:

Obtain and process pathology specimens, maintaining positive specimen identification. Perform routine histopathological and cytopathological tests, entry and recording functions in accordance with department policies and procedures.

Position Requirements:

• Successful completion of a course of study that meets all academic requirements for an Associate's or higher degree in a Histotechnician program from an accredited institution; OR

• Successful completion of a full course of study that meets all academic requirements for an Associate's degree or higher in one of the chemical, physical or biological sciences from an accredited institution.

• Less than one year of laboratory experience

Tasks, Duties, and Responsibilities:

• Interacts with physicians, employees and clients in a positive manner consistent with the mission and values of Bako Diagnostics.

• Perform routine and non-routine activities involved in the preparation of slides, for microscopic evaluation by pathologists.

• Process paperwork associated with accessioning and reporting.

• Ensure routine tissue processing.

• Perform embedding and microtomy.

• Prepare slides for routine Hematoxylin & Eosin and PAS staining.

• Perform cover slipping of stained slides either manually or via automation.

• Perform routine cytology preparations and PAP staining.

• Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of non-complex equipment.

• Perform filing of finished blocks and slides.

• Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either correct the problems or immediately notify the Histology Supervisor or Histology Lead.

• Follow the laboratory's standard operating procedures for job-related responsibilities.

• Ensure all safety, quality control and quality assurance standards are met.

• Ensure compliance with all local, federal, CLIA and CAP regulations.

• Maintain a clean and well-organized work area.
