Daytime Hospitalist - MedStar Washington Hospital Center We are seeking a Daytime Hospitalist to join our Hospital Medicine team at MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. General Summary of Position Provides internal medicine care 12 hours per day, 7 days per week in all areas of the hospital, including but not limited to management of inpatient referrals from primary care physicians (PCP) and the Primary Care Center (PCC), Emergency Department (ED) admissions, and consultations. Provides inpatient medical consultation on other adult patients. Participates as a faculty member in the Internal Medicine Residency program ("Residency") and in programs and initiatives that improve the department. Primary Duties and Responsibilities Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards; complies with governmental and accreditation regulations. Core clinical faculty responsibilities: participates in Residency curriculum development, develops and evaluates resident competencies, attends resident conferences, serves as a faculty advisor, and mentors residents. Teaches and closely oversees resident care of inpatients on the medical units, manages teaching rounds, and demonstrates knowledge of internal medicine patient care requirements. Provides internal medicine care within the inpatient setting, including history and physical exams, consultative services, daily rounding, and discharge planning; delivers high‑quality care judged by peers. Ensures accurate patient billing and coding for professional services and hospital charges; maintains reliable billing records for third‑party payors. Applies utilization criteria, including InterQual, to admission decisions and expected length of stay, keeping charges below peer averages. Efficiently manages a caseload of 10 or more patients per day, expediting work‑ups and facilitating timely movement of patients through admissions and transfers. Facilitates communication between the program and private attendings, and integrates the program with case management and physician extender services. Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service‑improvement teams, community outreach, and other committees. Uses interpersonal skills to communicate with patients, families, peers, ancillary staff, and consultants, and keeps patients and families informed of care plans and outcomes; communicates with the patient’s PCP regularly. Minimal Qualifications License to practice medicine in the State of Maryland. Education MD – Physician – State Licensure Board certification or eligibility in Internal Medicine or a comparable adult medical specialty required. Experience 1‑2 years of experience providing internal medicine care preferred. Licenses and Certifications MD – Physician – State Licensure Board certification or eligibility in Internal Medicine or a comparable adult medical specialty required. Fulfills the requirements for medical staff membership at the hospital. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Leadership, educator, and marketing skills. Clinical expertise and business acumen. Ability to collaborate with diverse groups of professionals and support staff. Basic computer skills preferred.
