Infection Preventionist

Job Summary The Infection Preventionist (IP) is responsible for the surveillance, analysis, interpretation, and reporting of healthcare-associated infections (HAI) and other reportable conditions. The role involves educating staff, patients, and visitors on infection prevention, developing and maintaining infection control policies and procedures, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards from agencies such as CDC, OSHA, CMS, and The Joint Commission. The IP collaborates with the Infection Prevention & Control Committee and the Performance Improvement team to implement a comprehensive infection prevention program across the health system. Responsibilities Develop, implement, maintain, and update the Infection Prevention and Control Plan and Program in alignment with regulatory agencies and best practices. Write, approve, and implement appropriate policies and procedures supporting infection prevention and control initiatives. Collect, trend, prepare, and maintain infection control data and statistical reports; provide reports to National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) and other regulatory bodies. Provide infection prevention and control support and resources to all areas within the health system. Serve as an expert resource on infection prevention and control; stay current with literature and leading practices. Facilitate and promote infection prevention education and training for staff, patients, families, and communities. Conduct new employee and annual infection prevention orientation and training. Maintain strong working relationships with Public Health and other regional, state, and national entities to ensure up-to-date information dissemination. Serve as a role model and liaison for infection prevention and control efforts. Co-chair the Infection Prevention and Control Committee and participate in other relevant committees and teams. Travel to various sites within the health system to assess, educate, and train staff on infection prevention practices. Required Skills & Certifications Bachelor's degree in a healthcare-related field such as Nursing, Public Health, Epidemiology, or Microbiology. Certification in Infection Control (CIC) required. Minimum of 3 years acute care/infection control experience and/or data collection, performance improvement, or risk management experience. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Knowledge of epidemiological principles and basic statistics. Preferred Skills & Certifications Master's degree in a healthcare-related field (e.g., MPH, MSN). Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ). Experience in Long-Term Care Infection Prevention and Control. Special Considerations Flu vaccine required. Travel required to various sites within the healthcare system for assessments, education, and training. Work involves collaboration with multiple regulatory and accreditation organizations.
