Job Description
Sterile Processing Technician (SPT)

Minimum Experience

3 years in a sterile processing department (SPD) required. First-time candidates will not be considered.

Patient Population

The role involves working in a busy sterile processing department that supports the Main Operating Room with the following services:

• General Surgery
• Gynecological Surgery (minimal, primarily robotic procedures)
• Cardiovascular/Thoracic Surgery
• Open Heart Surgery
• Laparoscopic Surgery
• Urology Surgery
• Orthopedic Surgery (including totals)
• Neuro Spine Surgery and Craniotomy
• Organ Procurement

Certifications Required

• Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD)
• International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materiel Management (IAHCSMM) / Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) preferred

General Skills and Work Setting Requirements

Key responsibilities include the operation of sterile processing and sterilization equipment:

• Flexible Cystoscopes
• SPD Sterilization Equipment: Steris Steam Sterilizers and Stryker VP4 Machines
• SPD Decontamination Equipment: Steris and Belimed Ultrasonic Washers, Steris Cart Washer, Steris Washer/Disinfectors

The candidate should demonstrate the ability to mentor and guide new and potential peers within the central services team.

Performance Expectations

All SPD contractors are expected to achieve a bioburden error rate of 0.1% or less monthly and to process an average of 20 trays per day (with approximately 100 instruments per tray).

Operational Details

• Average Surgical Volume: 25-40 cases per day, supported by 15 operating rooms
• Daily Tray Volume: Approximately 224
• Unit Systems: SPM System
• Scrub Color: Provided by the facility

Schedule and Compliance

• Shift: Daytime, 5 days a week (08:00 - 16:30)
• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend, unless specified otherwise
• Floating: Yes, within sectors of SPD
• Call Requirements: Rare
• Holidays: Expected to work major holidays if they fall within the assignment period; specifics may apply in multi-holiday scenarios.
• Compliance: Full compliance is required to start on schedule; any delays will result in a postponement of two weeks.

Candidates will undergo a clinical review to assess fit for the role. If deemed suitable, the candidate will be forwarded for a final decision.
