Data Analyst I or II - Statistics and Data Science Research support

Job Summary NORC at the University of Chicago is seeking a qualified Data Analyst I or II to join the Statistics and Data Science department and support a diverse range of research projects. Data Analysts work with Statisticians and Data Scientists to perform tasks such as data processing, quality assurance, analysis, and dissemination. Data Analysts import, clean, standardize, transform and validate data sets; research and document data procedures; support investigation of data problems; identify and analyze trends; support modeling efforts; and help prepare data presentations and reports, including charts, graphs and tables. They may assist in data collection and harmonization from primary or secondary sources, prepare deliverable data files, and maintain databases, data systems and relevant metadata dictionaries. The role requires collaboration in a team environment. Applicants must be eligible to work in the U.S. Visa sponsorship is not offered. Responsibilities Collaborate with statisticians, data scientists, technology experts, and subject matter experts to implement and improve data management and analysis activities. Develop programs and scripts for data cleaning, integration, transformation, harmonization, and data quality checks and validation. Support and enhance existing applications and databases; produce data documentation and dictionaries. Create data dashboards and visualizations, including charts, graphs, and tables for reports and presentations. Perform various types of data analysis and modeling, often involving multiple data sets. Contribute to documentation, reports, and presentations through writing sections, analytic summaries, and graphics. Apply AI tools to improve efficiency. Perform other duties as assigned. Required Skills Bachelor's degree in statistics, data science, computer science, or an equivalent field. 0-2 years of relevant experience (internships included). Programming in R, Python, and SQL. Familiarity with large data sets and quantitative modeling. Strong foundation in analytic methods, data engineering, machine learning, and scientific inquiry. Experience with data management, data reduction techniques, and data visualization. Working knowledge of data from administrative sources, surveys, social media, or sensor data. Strong problem‑solving and quantitative analysis skills, and willingness to investigate data issues. Ability to organize and prioritize work assignments. Strong communication, writing, and data storytelling skills. Enthusiasm for teamwork and collaboration across disciplinary boundaries. Preferred Skills Experience with SAS, Tableau, Hadoop, Hive, Databricks, MapReduce, and other large data systems. Expertise in language models, machine learning, cloud environments (AWS, Azure, GCP), and command‑line workflows (bash). Experience with JavaScript programming. Salary and Benefits The pay range is $62000-$73000. The position is classified as regular staff and is eligible for the comprehensive benefits program, which includes health, dental, vision, retirement, life insurance, disability insurance, paid time off, holidays, parental leave, bereavement leave, tuition assistance, and an Employee Assistance Program.
