1.00 Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent Preferred Qualifications Position Summary The primary responsibilities of an Academic Advisor for Intended Nursing Majors in the Pre-Professional Advising Office are meeting with assigned students in-person or virtually, providing each student with accurate information about the student's degree program, making recommendations about course selection for upcoming semesters, generating advising forms detailing these recommendations, and maintaining notes about these meetings. Academic Advisor will assist students with preparation for applying to the Ivester School of Nursing in addition to partnering with students in developing parallel plans. Academic Advisor will maintain consistent contact with their students, maintain accurate student records, and respond in a timely manner to questions from their students. An advisor will demonstrate a perspective that genuinely appreciates, understands, supports, and effectively accommodates various student backgrounds and experiences. - Meet with Intended Nursing students in person or virtually to recommend courses for the next semester, prepare advising forms, answer student questions, maintain communication with students via email, maintain thorough advising notes about appointments and other contact with students, and direct students to appropriate resources on campus. This involves extensive prep time and proficiency with various campus systems, software and resources.
- Host 1-2 hours of in-person/virtual drop-in hours for brief student questions.
- Assist students with preparation for applying to the Ivester School of Nursing in addition to partnering with students in developing parallel plans.
- Demonstrate a perspective that genuinely appreciates, understands, supports and effectively accommodates individuals with a wide range of professional and academic experiences.
60 Duties/Responsibilities Administrative Time & School of Nursing Liaison Work
- Answer student and staff emails, and create and maintain accurate records of student appointments, referrals, academic progress, and goals.
- Develop and maintain open lines of communication with Academic Advisor and Administrators within the Ivestor School of Nursing. Liaison work should keep the Intended Nursing Advisor up to date on admissions, curriculum, and policies, and should help to inform School of Nursing decisions related to admissions, curriculum, and policies.
- Schedule meetings and work on projects to benefit the advising office. A high level of independent work is expected.
20 Duties/Responsibilities Professional Development
- Attend staff and committee meetings, classes and training sessions offered on campus. This can include, but is not limited to, the Certificate in Academic Advising, Support Dawgs, and other campus training to maintain and enhance professional competencies.
- Academic Advisor will maintain knowledge of Nursing field, Nursing prerequisites, and program requirements at the University of Georgia and across the University System of Georgia.
10 Duties/Responsibilities New Student Orientation
- Academic Advisor should be available to work throughout June, July, and early August orientation sessions for incoming first-year and transfer students, as well as orientation sessions conducted in December/January.
- Academic Advisor will communicate with incoming students ahead of sessions, ensure students are properly assigned to an advising caseload, and prepare for in-person advising appointments.
- Academic Advisor will host Unit Welcome Meeting on Day One of First-Year Orientation to introduce incoming students to their major, School, and Pre-Professional Advising Office
