Archaeologist I

Overview Act as administrator of the Hobby License program; manage all databases related to the Maritime Research Division (MRD) program; support archaeological research; participate in community outreach events and act as principal/co‑principal investigator on projects as designated by the supervisor. The employee will also manage equipment and act as a dive safety officer for the MRD. Responsibilities Administer the hobby license process, handling licenses, reports, and public inquiries. Provide quarterly and yearly statistics on underwater sites and small finds to the managing archaeologist. Evaluate reports for archaeological potential and arrange site visits as warranted. Act as an archaeologist for the MRD, actively seeking and obtaining research, funding, and partnership opportunities. Plan, supervise, and conduct archaeological research, including historical and archival research, site assessments, excavation, documentation, and underwater surveys. Perform diving, underwater search, survey, and excavation, maintaining continuous qualification in all MRD diving operations. Write, present, and publish scholarly and popular papers and presentations on maritime archaeology. Maintain databases for the MRD, including hobby licenses, research and site files, imagery, equipment, and GIS systems. Supervise and maintain MRD equipment and supplies, keeping an up‑to‑date inventory and maintenance database, and reporting necessary procurements. Coordinate, plan, and operate equipment for projects and surveys, ensuring safe boat handling and diving operations. Act as the dive safety officer for MRD projects, reviewing safety plans and maintaining knowledge of safety procedures. Collaborate with the supervisor to achieve long‑ and short‑term goals related to education and outreach initiatives, including presentations, events, and social media. Provide assistance and guidance to SCIAA staff on underwater archaeology and the hobby license process to ensure compliance with federal, state, and university policies. Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in archaeology, anthropology, or a related research specialty. Master’s degree in archaeology or anthropology is preferred. Public relations skills and excellent communication skills. Research and documentation skills, including flexible writing for research, education, and outreach. Public speaking and organizational skills. Extensive diving experience, including low‑visibility, heavy seas, and challenging conditions. Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, social media, and small boat handling.
