Principal Engineer/Tech Lead - Instrument Integration, Engineering - Lab Automation

Overview The new Computational Sciences Center of Excellence (CoE) is a strategic, unified group whose goal is to harness the transformative power of data and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to assist our scientists in both pRED and gRED to deliver more innovative and transformative medicines for patients worldwide. Responsibilities Define and lead the architecture and design of complex, cross‑functional features within the instrument data ecosystem. Drive technical roadmaps for key software components of instrument data capture, processing, and distribution, aligning closely with the CoE goals. Set and enforce high technical standards for code quality, testing, deployment, and performance, and mentor engineers across the capability. Lead the investigation and resolution of critical, large‑scale distributed system issues. Collaborate with Genentech (gRED) and Pharma (pRED) scientists, the Data and Digital Catalyst (DDC) organization, and other engineering teams as a senior technical expert. Be accountable for delivering scalable and reliable instrument data integration projects. For the Tech Lead: Drive and own the technical architecture, roadmaps, and delivery of reliable, scalable software systems; serve as the senior technical expert to a small team of software engineers; design, develop, and test robust, scalable, and maintainable software systems for interfacing with diverse laboratory instruments; partner with product managers and scientists to translate user needs into actionable technical specifications; stay current with state‑of‑the‑art instrument integration and data systems. Qualifications – Principal Engineer B.S. in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field plus 7+ years of progressive experience in Biotech/Pharma focused on architecting and deploying scalable software systems for scientific research. Expert technical knowledge in distributed systems, data engineering, software architecture, cloud‑native architectures, and system design. Proficiency in Python and deep working knowledge of Java or C#. Extensive direct experience interfacing with a variety of scientific laboratory instruments (e.g., liquid handlers, plate readers, microscopes, mass spectrometers). Expert level background in cloud‑native architectures (ideally AWS). Qualifications – Tech Lead B.S. in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field plus 12+ years of experience in Biotech/Pharma focused on building and deploying scalable software systems for scientific research. Deep knowledge of lab workflows and the drug discovery domain. Expert knowledge in distributed systems, data engineering, software architecture, cloud‑native architectures, and system design. Hands‑on experience interfacing with a variety of scientific laboratory instruments (e.g., liquid handlers, plate readers, microscopes, mass spectrometers). Expert level technical background in cloud‑native architectures (ideally AWS). Compensation & Benefits The expected salary range for this position, based on the location of California, is for the Principal Engineer: $162,600 – $302,000, and for the Tech Lead: $189,200 – $351,400. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job‑related factors permitted by law.
