Job Description

Cafe Cook, Non Residential: non-exempt, full-time; on average 35 hours per week. Reports to Cafe Manager.

The Omega Caf is an independent facility within the Omega Food & Beverage department. The Omega Caf provides a welcoming, shared space where participants, staff, faculty and the public can gather, enjoy light meals, snacks, and beverages. The Caf also offers space for workshops and special events to meet and is host to book signings, concerts, and craft fairs.

The Cafe Cook is responsible for preparing made-to-order food for guests. In service to this responsibility, the Cook will set up an efficient station at the start of each shift and prep as necessary to ensure all items are available to order. A number of tasks in the Cafe are shared among the various staff on duty, and the manager on shift assigns such tasks based on need and personnel.

Cooks are expected to deliver food to tables, wash dishes, and on occasion, perform Barista/Cashier duties as needed.

Essential Functions

• Prepare food to order.
• Stock the line and station.
• Maintain cleanliness in the kitchen (clearing work surfaces, sweeping, etc).
• Run the dishwasher and put away dishes.
• Prep food items for use.
• Work with Manager and/or Head Cook to place and receive orders from outside vendors and the main kitchen.
• Working with knives, equipment with moving blades, open stovetop flames, hot oven, steam and oil.
• Serve food to tables.
• Be informed about all aspects of the food served including purveyors, ingredients and available choices.
• Perform deep cleaning tasks in kitchen, store room, cafe and deck.
• Be welcoming and provide expedient service to all patrons.
• Other duties as required by Supervisor.

Work Details

• This position functions in the Cafe on the Omega Campus.
• This is a full-time position, 35 hours a week. Weekend and evening availability are required.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to frequently move items that weigh 30-50lbs for various needs.
• Ability to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time
• Ability to traverse a hilly campus in diverse weather conditions
• Ability to position self to perform diverse job tasks as necessary
• Ability to communicate information and ideas so that others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
• Ability to work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
• Ability to observe details at close range.

Required Experience/Qualities

• Six months of cooking experience required
• ServSafe Certification preferred
• Timely, reliable and service oriented individual.
• Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
• Ability to work comfortably in a fast-paced environment.
• Team player.
• Alignment with Omega's mission, goals and core values.

Compensation

Seasonal staff work full-time for six months, between early-May through late-October. Seasonal staff receive a compensation package that includes:

• Wage
• One delicious meal during each work shift
• Access to Omega's staff benefits

This compensation package is at minimum equivalent to the New York State minimum wage.
