Classified Title: Assistant Fire Marshal FLSA Status: Non‑Exempt Salary: $68,890 – $79,144 per year (determined by training/experience). The purpose of this position is to perform operational and administrative duties involved in planning, operation, organization, and evaluation of fire prevention, fire code enforcement, and rapid key‑box entry. The Assistant Fire Marshal ensures compliance with the County’s adopted fire and safety codes. Duties include inspecting new and existing structures, completing fire investigations, reviewing construction plans, ensuring safety compliance at fire sites, conducting public education programs, consulting with the public, and executing necessary reporting. Reports to the Fire Marshal. Essential Functions Enforce fire codes and ordinances. Collaborate with architects and engineers on new building concepts and hazards. Review plans and specifications of fire systems for compliance with guidelines. Recommend code improvements and ordinances to protect life and property. Perform office tasks such as issuing permits for burning and fireworks, preparing grant proposals, data entry, and phone call management. Attend meetings, in‑service training, technical or professional classes, seminars, and conferences to improve skills. Conduct and assist with technical fire and life‑safety inspections to eliminate hazards. Review development plans, perform equipment testing, and provide requirements and information as assigned. Meet deadlines for plan reviews and inspections; maintain accurate records and reports. Perform quality assurance to ensure fair, consistent, and accurate fire inspections and plan reviews. Review fire system requirement plans and conduct related inspections; provide technical interpretations. Assist in public fire and life‑safety education programs. Conduct frequent telephone, mail, and electronic correspondence. Maintain assigned vehicle and equipment. Perform other incidental and related duties as required. Provide twenty‑four‑hour emergency response capability. Subject to pre‑employment, post‑accident, reasonable suspicion, and random drug screens. Competencies Thorough knowledge of NIMS, IFC, applicable laws and ordinances, modern fire suppression, and emergency medical services principals. Considerable knowledge of fire prevention methods and state and county regulations applicable to firefighting and prevention. Knowledge of proper maintenance, retention, and use of fire records. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret business periodicals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations. Effectiveness in presenting information and responding to questions from government officials, emergency response personnel, civic organizations, media, and the public. Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies and determine the proper course of action. Strong organizational and communication skills. Ability to interpret technical instructions in diagrammatic or mathematical form. Diplomatic, tolerant, and professional conduct with respect and integrity. Demonstrated professional judgement when applying guidelines and policies. Strong work ethic and positive attitude. Diplomatical, cooperative problem‑solving, leadership, and working relationship skills. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma and five years of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Valid Fire Inspector I license or certification. Valid Fire Investigator I license or certification. Valid Firefighter II license or certification. Valid AEMT or Paramedic license or certification. Valid Class D Tennessee driver’s license. Ability to pass a physical and drug screen by a licensed physician. Response capability of thirty minutes or less within Wilson County. Human Interaction: Provide guidance and interpretation to others. Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Operate and control relevant equipment. Verbal Aptitude: Utilize descriptive data and information. Mathematical Aptitude: Perform basic arithmetic, calculate percentages, interpret graphs, and calculate drug dosages. Functional Reasoning: Execute written, oral, or diagrammatic instructions with independent judgment. Situational Reasoning: Exercise judgment, decisiveness, and creativity in evaluating information. ADA Compliance / Physical Demands Physical Ability: Tasks require heavy physical effort, including climbing, balancing, frequent lifting (20‑125 lb, occasionally up to 200 lb), standing, walking, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pulling, and pushing. Constant driving of a specialized vehicle and use of fingers and flexible wrist motions are required. Sensory Requirements: Ability to perceive colors, sounds, odors, and visual cues.
