Position Overview

We are seeking an OBD Calibration Engineer to support the development, testing, and validation of On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) systems for advanced gasoline, diesel, hybrid, and powertrain applications. This role will focus on diagnostic strategy development, emissions compliance, calibration, testing, and data analysis to ensure vehicle systems meet regulatory and performance requirements.

The ideal candidate will have experience in engine calibration, emissions regulations, diagnostic development and automotive testing , along with strong analytical and programming skills.

Key Responsibilities

Support the design, development, and calibration of On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) systems to meet evolving vehicle architecture and emissions regulations.
Assist in evaluating diagnostic monitoring strategies and fault detection boundaries to ensure regulatory compliance.
Participate in the full OBD development process including:
Requirements analysis
Diagnostic algorithm development
Calibration tuning
Validation testing
Certification support
Develop and utilize Python-based scripts and automation tools to streamline analysis, calibration, and virtual modeling activities.
Analyze large engineering datasets to identify trends, troubleshoot issues, and support performance improvements.
Create sensor and actuator failure simulations using CAN-based communication and manipulation techniques .
Support engine, powertrain, and aftertreatment testing on both dynamometers and vehicle platforms for gasoline and diesel systems.
Assist with test setup, installation, and commissioning of:
Internal combustion engine systems
Hybrid-electric powertrain systems
Review and analyze test data to verify system performance against engineering and emissions requirements.
Prepare technical reports, documentation, and presentations for internal teams and customer reviews.
Work closely with software, systems, calibration, testing, and certification teams to support successful project execution.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering , or related field ( Master's preferred )
1-5 years of experience in:
OBD calibration development
Emissions certification testing
Automotive powertrain development
Strong understanding of:
Thermodynamics
Fluid mechanics
Internal combustion engines
Working knowledge of emissions regulations including:
CARB (California Air Resources Board)
EPA OBD (United States Environmental Protection Agency)
EU-OBD
WWH-OBD
Experience calibrating and implementing OBD strategies that meet CARB regulatory standards.
Understanding of diagnostic fault handling and vehicle communication systems.
Experience developing OBD software design requirements .
Ability to use Python for automation, data processing, and virtual calibration modeling.
Experience preparing OBD data for emissions certification programs.
Strong background in OBD testing, certification support, and data reporting .
Experience developing diagnostic logic diagrams and system concepts.
Strong understanding of:
Diesel combustion systems
Spark ignition (SI) combustion systems
Diesel aftertreatment systems
Experience with automotive calibration and development tools, including:
ETAS INCA
ATI Vision
Vector CANape
Vector CANalyzer
MATLAB / Simulink
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to thrive in a fast-paced engineering environment and work effectively within cross-functional teams.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working with hybrid or electrified powertrain systems
Knowledge of U.S. emissions certification procedures and regulatory testing requirements
Familiarity with automotive communication standards:
SAE J1939
SAE J1979
Exposure to engine controls and aftertreatment control systems
Hands-on engine experience including:
Engine assembly
Rebuilding
Troubleshooting mechanical issues
