Physician - Associate Chief of Staff for Geriatrics and Extended Care (ACOS-GEC)

Summary The Associate Chief of Staff for Geriatrics and Extended Care (ACOS-GEC) reports directly to the Chief of Staff (COS) located primarily on our main campus in Chicago, Illinois. The position has a wide range of inpatient and outpatient clinical responsibilities encompassing the administration of medical care and treatment to Veterans in the Chicago and Northwest Indiana area. A 2-page resume is not required for this occupational series. For more information, refer to the Required Documents section. Qualifications To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements United States Citizenship (non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy). Doctor of Medicine or equivalent allopathic/osteopathic degree from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year of completion. Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, commonwealth, or the District of Columbia. Residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty program leading to eligibility for board certification. One year of post‑medical‑school training (internship, first year of residency, or transitional year residency) approved by ACGME or AOA followed by two years of post‑training independent practice with a full license in the United States. Non‑U.S. residency training followed by at least three years of independent practice in the U.S. under a full license for duties related to the position. Residents currently enrolled in accredited residency programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements are eligible to be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) on an intermittent basis under a scope of practice with supervision. PRPs must be fully licensed physicians and not only training license holders. PRPs are not independent practitioners and will not be privileged. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Must hold a U.S. state medical license; preferably board certification in geriatrics. Preferred experience: Certification in geriatrics. Hospital and/or nursing home administrative experience. Physical requirements: walking, bending, stooping, and some lifting in direct patient care; may also involve extended periods of sitting. Reference: For more information on qualification standards, visit Duties Oversee all internal and external operations of the Geriatrics and Extended Care service, ensuring alignment with the network mission and VA policies and external agency standards. Administer clinical and administrative programs, including the Community Living Center (CLC), Home Based Primary Care (HBPC), Contract Adult Day Health Care (CADHC), Contract Community Nursing Home Program (CNH), GeriPACT, Dementia Program, Home Hospice Program, and Homemaker/Home Health Aide Program (H/HHA). Manage and direct major specialty treatment programs at the multidivisional facility. Develop and implement policies and procedures to enhance quality of care and operational efficiency. Lead major projects and assignments of broad scope and complexity, demonstrating advanced practice skills and professional judgment. Collaborate with the Physician Executive Management Team to coordinate staff rosters, scheduling, and performance improvement initiatives. Participate in strategic planning, resource allocation, and community engagement activities. Maintain compliance with federal, VA, and accrediting agency regulations, including reporting and auditing requirements. Support quality improvement and patient safety initiatives in areas of Geriatrics and home‑based care. Provide direct clinical care as a geriatrician, including inpatient consults, outpatient visits, and telehealth services. Work schedule: Monday‑Friday, 8:00 am—4:30 pm. Benefits Competitive salary with annual performance bonus and regular salary increases. Paid Time Off: 50-55 days per year (26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 paid federal holidays, and up to 5 days for CME). Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5‑year vesting) and federal 401(k) with up to 5% VA contribution. Insurance: Federal health, vision, dental, term life, long‑term care (many federal insurance programs carried into retirement). Licensure: One full and unrestricted license in any U.S. state or territory. Mental health Exchange (CME) reimbursement up to $1,000 per year (must be full‑time with board certification).
