Job Description - Registered Nurse 1 (NY HELPS) (2602632) Registered Nurse 1 (NY HELPS) RequiredQualifications: Possession of a license and current registration as a registered professional nurse in New York State. PreferredQualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing and at least one year of previous hospital acute care experience. At Stony Brook University's Student Health Services, our Registered Nurses are critical members of the team who diagnose and treat responses to actual or potential health problems by means of nursing methods and techniques such as case finding, health teaching and counseling. Incumbents provide care supportive to and restorative of health and well-being, while adhering to a medical regimen. Duties of a Registered Nurse may include the following but are not limited to: Assess the patient’s condition and nursing needs; coordinate nursing care activities with other health disciplines involved in the treatment effort to relate and integrate the nursing regimen with the treatment plan for patients. Administer direct care when professional nursing skills and judgment are needed. Administer medications. Practice infection control and participate in the maintenance of a clean and safe environment. Assumes responsibility and accountability for the delivery of nursing care to all assigned patients. Communicates changes in patient’s condition and questions regarding patient care to Nurse Manager/Clinician. Develops and maintains a current written plan of care for assigned patients. Sets priorities to meet the patient’s needs. Sets patient goals and priorities with the patient. Provides documented evidence in the medical record of patient teaching and their responses and understanding of the teaching. Ensures that patient education and instructions are consistent with that of the physician or designee. Communicates and works effectively with other staff and other departments. Professional Development and Committee Involvement Participates in opportunities that promote their learning, growth, and development (i.e., classes, training, committees, webinars). Contributes to the Division of Student Affairs and Stony Brook University by attending and/or supporting events, activities, and programs sponsored by areas within and outside the Office of Student Life (i.e., campus-wide traditions, events, programs). Evening and weekend hours will be required at times. Working Conditions: Working conditions may involve exposure to infectious disease, blood, body fluids and/or tissue as well as other unpleasant elements such as accidents, injuries and illness. May be exposed to and be required to handle varying unpredictable, emergency and crisis situations. Special Notes: This is a full-time position, 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. FLSA Nonexempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously. Mandatory rehire roster candidates have preference. SG 18 Hiring Rate, $76,147, plus Geographic pay of $12,871 per year and Location Pay of $4,000 per year. The selected candidate must successfully clear a background investigation. Essential Position: This has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed. Positions that are designated as such are required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are canceled, and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency. This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply. At a future date, it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in an NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified. Employees appointed via the NY HELPS program are restricted for promotional appointment until their position is covered-in to the competitive class by the New York State Civil Service Commission (CSC), or they otherwise obtain permanent competitive status. The CSC has recently covered-in employees who were appointed via NY HELPS on a permanent or contingent permanent basis between June 26, 2024 and June 11, 2025. Notification to employees regarding a change in their status is forthcoming.
