Job Summary XTRM/SPRL Labs is a facility of the College of Engineering that serves clients who are faculty, government agencies (such as NASA and DoD), and commercial companies in the development of
unique integrated systems and instrumentation that are often used in challenging environments (e.g. space, arctic, above/on/below the water). The XTRM/SPRL Lab professional staff, with faculty and researchers, have built more than 35 space systems and instruments; instrumented numerous sounding rockets, balloons and aircraft; and developed ground-based instruments. For seven decades SPRL has been one of a handful of university centers able to conceive, design, build, test, and operate space flight instruments a truly "end-to-end" operation. The engineer will perform engineering design and testing work in the sub-field of space instrumentation for space and planetary sciences with an emphasis on design and control system. The engineer will be responsible for implementation of hardware and software subsystems in support of primary research and instrument development. This includes assisting with new instrument development and instrument testing using specialized equipment. Electronic design is anticipated supporting data system development, and signal conditioning electronics. These duties are performed under supervision and direction by experienced engineers. Responsibilities* Performing circuit and schematic design from requirements and developing the associated design documentation and test planning. Instrument testing, including use of specialized equipment Support of proposal development especially in space systems Designing, developing, testing, and evaluating programmable hardware devices, digital circuits, and/or embedded systems. Data systems design, including selection of parts, materials, and process to survive harsh environments. Programming, modifying, and/or configuring system firmware that manages the reprogrammable hardware and associated interfaces to provide services to the applications.
Applying software engineering principles to design, develop, test, and evaluate/modify software /firmware applications. Working with other engineering teams and clients on a regular basis to discuss design concepts, potential problems, and proposed resolutions. Required Qualifications* BS in electrical engineering, physics, mathematics, or relevant areas Familiarity with digital systems (FPGA, ASICs, PCB, Microcontrollers, etc.). Understanding the process for developing electronic designs and test procedures from requirements. Develop new documentation and work to keep existing documentation up-to-date. Work as part of a team of faculty, research scientists, engineers, and technicians. Must be a U.S. citizen to comply with sponsor (NASA) regulations. Must be willing to travel occassionally for this position. Desired Qualifications* MS or other advanced degree in engineering, physics, or mathematics Experience in industry or student projects designing systems and equipment for application in space environments, especially with consideration to charging, radiation, or other effects on the design of electronic equipment. Experience with designing, developing, testing, and/or evaluating microelectronic components (FPGA, ASICs, PCB, Microcontrollers, etc.), technology and equipment. Schematic and layout design experience.
Experience with coding in C, C#, VHDL, MATLAB, and JavaScript. Experience using Visual Studio, Altium Designer, Visio, MATLAB/Simulink, AMD Vivado Design Suite, Libero Design Suite, LTSpice, and Git. Familiarity with communication protocols such as SPI, I?C, UART, Ethernet, SpaceWire, and USB. Experience designing with memory, high-speed serial interfaces, ADCs, DACs, or RF/digital mixed-signal systems.
