Special Education Teacher – Elementary Autism Program (Self-Contained Classroom)
Location: Spotsylvania County Public Schools, Spotsylvania County, VA

Position Summary
Spotsylvania County Public Schools is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Special Education Teacher to provide specialized instruction and behavioral support within an elementary self-contained Autism classroom. The successful candidate will support students with Autism Spectrum Disorder and varying levels of academic, communication, social-emotional, and adaptive needs while fostering growth in a structured, supportive learning environment.
Primary Responsibilities

Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
Deliver specialized instruction aligned with Virginia standards and individual student goals.
Use evidence-based instructional practices for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Implement Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs).
Collaborate with speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, school psychologists, behavior specialists, and other service providers.
Supervise and support classroom paraprofessionals.
Maintain accurate records, progress-monitoring data, and compliance documentation.
Promote communication, social-emotional development, self-regulation, and independent living skills.
Create and maintain a safe, structured, and engaging classroom environment.

Student Population

Elementary-aged students with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Students with varying communication, sensory, behavioral, and cognitive needs.
Self-contained classroom requiring individualized instruction and intensive support.

Required Qualifications

Active Virginia Special Education Teaching License or eligibility for licensure.
Experience developing and implementing IEPs.
Knowledge of special education regulations, compliance, and documentation.
Strong classroom management and behavior intervention skills.
Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and families.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience teaching students with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Experience in self-contained special education classrooms.
Knowledge of ABA principles, structured teaching, visual schedules, social stories, and functional communication systems.
Experience supporting students with significant cognitive and behavioral needs.
Crisis prevention and de-escalation training.
