Job Title: CNC Swiss Lathe Machinist

Job Description

The CNC Swiss Lathe Machinist sets up and runs production jobs on CNC Swiss lathes within the precision department, ensuring tight tolerances and consistent quality on medium to high-volume runs. This role manages multiple machines in a cell environment, performs in-process inspections with precision measuring tools, and works independently after an initial training period to meet daily production and quality targets.

Responsibilities

• Set up CNC Swiss lathes and CNC mills independently, including tooling, offsets, and program selection, to prepare machines for production runs.
• Run production parts on CNC Swiss lathes and CNC mills in the precision department, managing 2–3 machines at a time within a cell of 7 CNC lathes.
• Maintain and hold tolerances to approximately +/- 0.0005 on the majority of parts produced.
• Perform in-process and final inspections using micrometers, calipers, bore gages, and optical comparators to verify part quality.
• Read and interpret blueprints to determine setup requirements, part specifications, and inspection criteria.
• Monitor machines during operation, troubleshoot issues, and make necessary adjustments to maintain quality and productivity.
• Perform changeovers between jobs efficiently to minimize downtime and maintain production schedules.
• Utilize mechanical aptitude to identify and resolve basic machine, tooling, or process problems.
• Collaborate with the first-shift lead during the 30-minute shift overlap to review job orders and priorities for the day.
• Work independently after completing an approximate two-week training period on days with the lead, following established procedures and work instructions.
• Support long-run production jobs, typically ranging from 200 parts to thousands of parts, while maintaining consistent quality throughout the run.
• Use basic programming knowledge and CAD/CAM-related processes as needed to support machine setup and operation.
• Follow all safety, quality, and housekeeping standards to keep the work area clean, organized, and compliant with company policies.

Essential Skills

• Proven ability to set up CNC lathes independently without assistance.
• Experience setting up and running CNC Swiss lathes or CNC mills (openings available for both mill and Swiss).
• Ability to check part quality using micrometers, calipers, and bore gages.
• Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints for job setup and inspection.
• Hands-on experience with CNC machining processes in a production or precision environment.
• Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills for machining and equipment issues.
• Capability to maintain tight tolerances, including approximately +/- 0.0005 on precision parts.
• Comfort working with long production runs and managing multiple machines simultaneously.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• CNC Swiss lathe experience is highly preferred.
• Experience with Haas CNC mills or similar equipment is beneficial.
• Familiarity with optical comparators for precision inspection.
• Exposure to CAD/CAM and basic CNC programming concepts.
• Experience in both precision and high-volume production environments is an advantage.
• Ability to work across different shifts (A, B, C) as required by business needs.

Work Environment

The role is based in a clean and organized machine shop that has recently updated lobby and engineering office areas. The facility operates on three shifts with both a precision side and a production side, creating a busy and fast-paced environment. Openings are available across multiple shifts: A shift offers a Friday–Sunday schedule from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. for a total of 36 hours worked with pay for 40 hours; B shift runs Monday–Thursday from 4:30 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. with unlimited overtime opportunities; C shift also has openings for both lathe and mill roles. The shop can be loud when machines are running and can become hot in the summer due to the absence of air conditioning; large fans and open truck bay doors help circulate air. You will work with CNC Swiss lathes, CNC mills, precision measuring tools such as micrometers, calipers, bore gages, and optical comparators, as well as CAD/CAM and CNC programming-related equipment in a structured cell environment.

This is a Permanent position based out of Benton Harbor, MI.

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $30.00/hr.
