Over‑the‑Road (OTR) Truck Driver Job Overview : Operate a Class A commercial tractor‑trailer on long‑distance, multi‑state routes. Perform pre‑trip, en‑route, and post‑trip inspections, maintain accurate electronic logs, mileage records, and delivery documentation, and communicate regularly with dispatch. Secure cargo and ensure all pickups and deliveries are completed safely, efficiently, and on schedule. Responsibilities : Operate a Class A commercial tractor‑trailer in compliance with DOT regulations and company policies. Perform pre‑trip, en‑route, and post‑trip inspections to ensure vehicle safety and compliance. Maintain accurate electronic logs, mileage records, and delivery documentation. Follow all Hours of Service (HOS) requirements and safety standards. Secure cargo to prevent damage or loss during transit. Communicate regularly with dispatch regarding route status, delays, and delivery updates. Promptly report any accidents, traffic incidents, or mechanical issues. Complete pre‑ and post‑trip inspections on flatbeds, dry vans, regional, or dedicated routes as required. Maintain equipment cleanliness and presentability. Verify paperwork for completeness and accuracy. Compensation & Pay : Compensation typically structured as cents per mile (CPM), percentage of load, or guaranteed weekly pay. Average annual earnings range from $60,000 to $90,000+ depending on experience, mileage, and route type. Additional earnings through detention pay, layover pay, safety bonuses, performance incentives, and sign‑on bonuses. CPM rates: $0.60–$0.80 for OTR dry van, $0.72–$0.80 for flatbed; higher rates for regional and dedicated routes. Potential bonus pay up to $5,000 sign‑on and $3,000 annual safety bonus. Minimum 12months of verifiable Class A driving experience within the last 36months (or 3months of experience with an accredited school program). No more than one CMV on‑road preventable accident in the last 2years and no major CMV preventable accidents in the last 5years. No more than 2 moving violations in the last 2years (or 1 moving violation and 1 accident in the last 3years). No DUI/DWI within the last 5years (or 10years if the offense occurred while holding a CDL). Pass DOT physical, drug test, and have no drug‑related convictions within the applicable time frames. Strong safety record and reliable work history. Ability to perform as a solo driver or within a team, with knowledge of dry van, flatbed, regional, or dedicated routes.
