Community Services Officer - Hourly

Position Overview This is a part‑time, temporary, at‑will position. The position is not eligible for full‑time benefits. It may involve up to 29 hours per week, up to 960 hours in a fiscal year. The employee may be required to work days, nights, weekends, and holidays. Essential Functions Assist in response to non‑hazardous police calls, including interviewing principals and witnesses, collecting and preserving physical evidence, performing crime scene fingerprinting, recording factual data, taking photographs, and preparing written crime reports. Provide traffic control and minor traffic accident reports at accident scenes, fires, and defective traffic signal intersections. Conduct security patrols of park grounds and buildings, prevent or detect violations of laws and ordinances, report violations, and clear parks at closing time. Enforce parking regulations, tag and handle abandoned vehicles, and maintain storage procedures. Perform residential inspections for yard sale permits and commercial inspections for business licenses. Assist in crime prevention programs such as family violence education, Community in Action, and business support; may assist with emergency management and crime analysis. Assist with department and city community events. Receive visitors at the police front desk, document information, and prepare related crime reports, such as stolen property. If assigned as a Matron, assist in searching, booking, transporting, or releasing female prisoners under a Police Officer’s direction. Assist Police Officers in searching, booking, fingerprinting, monitoring, transporting, or releasing prisoners; may assist in dispatch and jail duty. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent; any combination of education and/or experience that provides the required knowledge and skills. Possession of a California Class C driver’s license, proof of insurance, and a satisfactory driving record. English and Spanish bilingual skills highly desirable. Typing ability of 25 words per minute net. Basic office practices and procedures knowledge, basic computer software applications, and effective customer service techniques. Ability to read, interpret, and follow departmental policies, rules, and regulations; follow oral and written directions; operate telephone, police radio equipment, and other office equipment; make accurate observations and record situations, facts, and statements accurately; exercise sound judgment; meet the public in situations requiring diplomacy and tact; communicate effectively orally and in writing; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships; be sensitive to the needs and concerns of ethnic and cultural groups; and evaluate sensitive situations quickly and initiate appropriate action to diffuse situations and resolve problems. Skill in operating a variety of office equipment, including computer, and ability to type 25 words per minute net. Physical ability to walk, sit, talk, hear, stand for extended periods, use hands to handle objects, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds. Technical Skills Knowledge of basic office practices and computer software applications. Typing ability of 25 words per minute net. Physical Demands and Work Environment The role requires frequent walking, sitting, talking, and standing for extended periods; occasional use of hands to handle objects; occasional climbing or balancing; occasional lifting or moving up to 50 pounds. The work environment may be quiet in the office and moderately loud outdoors, with exposure to traffic, dust, gas, fumes, and chemicals.
