AI Engineer

MISO is hiring an AI Engineer to build innovative AI‑powered solutions that directly influence how the power grid is planned, operated, and optimized. In this role, you will apply artificial intelligence and cloud‑native technologies to predict grid conditions, enhance real‑time reliability, and enable smarter decisions across one of North America’s most complex energy systems. You’ll join the Emerging Technology team, collaborating with forward‑thinking engineers and data professionals to design, test, and deploy prototypes. Responsibilities Building AI that matters – prototype and develop AI‑driven and intelligent agent solutions that directly support grid reliability and smarter decision‑making. Experimenting at the edge of what’s next: test emerging tools, frameworks, and APIs (like OpenAI and Vertex AI), and shape recommendations for how AI is used across MISO. Turning ideas into reality by collaborating in fast‑paced ideation sessions to create prototypes, minimum viable products (MVPs), and scalable solutions that move from concept to production. Growing MISO as an AI leader – stay current on the latest advancements in AI and share insights with teammates and stakeholders, influencing how emerging technologies are adopted across the organization. Collaborating with a multidisciplinary team of data scientists, data engineers, and software engineers to produce AI solutions, helping bring emerging technologies into a mission‑critical energy environment. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, Data Analytics, or a related field. Proficiency with AI coding assistants (Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code) for real‑time prototyping from natural language inputs. Hands‑on experience with prompt engineering – building Retrieval‑Augmented Generation (RAG) pipelines or experimenting with agent frameworks. Strong programming skills in Python and R (including libraries like scikit‑learn, PyTorch, or TensorFlow for machine learning development). Experience developing and building scalable APIs (REST, gRPC). Experience integrating AI/LLM tools such as OpenAI, Azure OpenAI, or Anthropic APIs into applications. Familiarity with version control (Git), CI/CD pipelines, and deploying applications in containerized environments (Docker; basic Kubernetes awareness). R and Python proficiency preferred for additional role expertise. The base salary compensation range offered for this role is $152,000 – $177,000 USD annually. Salary may vary by location, individual competencies, education, professional certifications, and experience. The position is also eligible for an annual bonus if individual performance and company objectives are met.
