Job Description
This Phlebotomist II float position supports multiple patient service centers by performing high-quality blood draws and specimen collections, troubleshooting issues, assisting with training, and recommending workflow improvements. You will work in a fast-paced environment, providing clear and courteous explanations to patients, handling specimens according to strict protocols, and ensuring accurate documentation and labeling to maintain specimen integrity and support reliable laboratory results.
Responsibilities
Work Environment
This role is based primarily in patient service centers and requires travel as a float phlebotomist among multiple locations in New York, including sites in Castleton, Delmar, Catskill, Schenectady, Cobleskill, Amsterdam, Valatie, Albany, and Guilderland. You will typically work an 8-hour day scheduled anytime between 6:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., with a 5-hour shift on alternating Saturdays every two weeks from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The environment is fast-paced and patient-facing, with an average of 20-60 blood draws per day depending on the site. You will initially train for approximately 2-3 weeks at a designated patient service center and will most likely work with a team until you are fully trained, after which you may operate more independently depending on site needs. The work involves frequent use of phlebotomy equipment such as straight and butterfly needles, centrifuges, and standard laboratory collection supplies, as well as computer systems and Microsoft Office Suite for documentation and communication. The setting emphasizes safety, regulatory compliance, and professional conduct, with adherence to all applicable health and safety protocols.

Job Description

Responsibilities
- Perform venipuncture and other specimen collections, including blood, urine, and fecal samples, using straight needles and butterfly needles as appropriate.
- Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients in a clear, courteous, and professional manner to ensure understanding and comfort.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all information to ensure 100% accuracy before processing.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens according to specific test orders and laboratory protocols.
- Collect, store, and handle specimens following established procedures, including placing samples in appropriate containers and maintaining required temperatures to preserve specimen integrity.
- Package specimens for transport in accordance with protocol, ensuring all regulatory and safety requirements are met.
- Review and confirm test requisitions or computer-generated labels against orders or scripts to ensure correct tests are performed.
- Update patient information and record maintenance data accurately in the appropriate systems or logs.
- Perform decontamination tasks and maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area in alignment with laboratory and safety standards.
- Understand and fully interpret physicians' orders to ensure proper specimen collection and processing.
- Answer telephone calls, assist with inquiries, and read laboratory results as needed to support patient care and internal stakeholders.
- Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and adhere to all safety and regulatory requirements related to specimen collection and handling.
- Attend and complete annual department trainings and ongoing education as required.
- Support troubleshooting of workflow or specimen-related issues and make recommendations to improve efficiency and quality.
- Assist with training and supporting colleagues, working as part of a team especially during the initial training period.
- Perform approximately 20-60 blood draws per day, depending on the assigned location.
- Travel between multiple patient service centers as a float phlebotomist, adapting to different teams, workflows, and patient populations.
- Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
- Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
- High school diploma or GED.
- 2-4 years of overall experience in a related healthcare or laboratory role.
- Demonstrated proficiency performing blood draws using both straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Ability to accurately match laboratory requisition forms with specimen tubes and verify patient and test information.
- Strong attention to detail in labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and storing specimens according to test requirements.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for documentation, communication, and basic data entry.
- Solid understanding of OSHA and DEP regulations related to safety and specimen handling.
- Ability to clearly explain procedures to patients and provide courteous, professional customer service.
- Capability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment while managing a high volume of blood draws.
- Willingness and ability to travel between multiple sites as a float phlebotomist.
- Experience working in a patient service center, physician office, or similar outpatient environment.
- Comfort working with varied patient populations, including different age groups and clinical needs.
- Ability to learn new processes quickly, typically within a 2-3 week training period.
- Strong communication skills for interacting with patients, clinical staff, and internal teams.
