Senior Migration Architect

Job Overview Senior Migration Architect – Lead cloud transformation efforts for the United States Coast Guard at C5ISC in Alexandria, VA. Define strategic roadmap for migrating critical Coast Guard capabilities to cloud infrastructure. Clearance Must currently hold an active DOD Secret clearance and be a U.S. Citizen. Responsibilities Lead complex cloud migration projects from planning through execution. Assess existing IT infrastructure and legacy applications to determine cloud readiness. Assess legacy systems and design modernization strategies including containerization and microservices. Develop migration methodologies and ensure minimal organizational disruption during transitions. Facilitate customer onboarding and implement a consistent pathway to cloud adoption. Optimize application performance and reliability in cloud environments. Design target cloud architectures, select appropriate migration patterns, and establish governance frameworks for cloud operations. Ensure cloud migrations maintain or improve performance, security, and compliance standards while optimizing costs and leveraging cloud-native capabilities. Strategic Architecture & Design Design and architect scalable, resilient, and secure cloud solutions for legacy systems to migrate to AWS or Azure platforms. Develop cloud strategy and roadmaps aligned with organizational objectives and technical requirements. Create reference architectures, design patterns, and technical standards for cloud implementations. Lead architectural reviews and provide guidance on complex technical decisions. Serve as primary technical authority on migrating legacy on-prem systems to the cloud. Mentor, guide, and supervise legacy system technology teams. Evaluate emerging cloud technologies and assess their potential impact on organizational goals. Drive adoption of DevOps practices, infrastructure as code, and automation frameworks. Security & Compliance Design secure cloud architectures implementing zero-trust principles and defense-in-depth strategies. Ensure compliance with industry standards (SOC 2, HIPAA, PCI-DSS, etc.) and regulatory requirements. Monitor and optimize cloud spending through rightsizing, reserved instances, and automation. Implement cost allocation strategies and provide regular cost analysis and recommendations. Design solutions that balance performance requirements with cost considerations. Establish governance frameworks for cloud resource management. Partner with business stakeholders to understand requirements and translate them into technical solutions. Collaborate with cross-functional teams including development, operations, security, and product management. Present architectural designs and recommendations to executive leadership. Create and maintain comprehensive technical documentation. Qualifications Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or related technical field. Preferred Education: Master’s degree in Computer Science, Cloud Computing, or MBA with technical background. 8+ years of overall IT experience. 8+ years of hands‑on cloud architecture and implementation experience. 4+ years of experience with both AWS and Azure platforms. Proven track record of managing cloud transformation projects exceeding $1M in scope. Certifications – AWS Solutions Architect Professional, Azure Solutions Architect Expert. Technical Skills Multi-cloud and hybrid architecture design patterns. Cloud-to-cloud integration and data synchronization strategies. Terraform, AWS CloudFormation, Azure ARM templates. Ansible, Puppet, or Chef for configuration management. CI/CD pipeline design using Azure DevOps, AWS CodePipeline, Jenkins, or GitHub Actions. Container orchestration with Kubernetes, Docker Swarm, or managed services. Zero-trust principles and identity & access management best practices. Additional Requirements Agile/Scrum methodology experience. Large-scale project delivery experience ($5M+ budgets). Risk management and mitigation strategies. Change management and organizational transformation experience.
