Emergency Director

Pet+ER is looking to add an Emergency Director to our Emergency and Critical Care team at our new hospital in Hunt Valley, MD opened in June 2023. The hospital offers 24‑hour emergency and critical care services, partnering with in‑house specialty teams across Surgery, Internal Medicine, Oncology, Cardiology, Neurology, Ophthalmology, and Canine Rehabilitation to provide the highest level of support to patients and their owners. The facility houses a state‑of‑the‑art ICU with stat case receiving bays, a Canon ultrasound system, high‑flow oxygen support, critical patient monitoring in multiple Snyder oxygen kennels, digital radiology, a 6‑lead EKG, an in‑house laboratory with coagulation and blood gas monitoring, a spacious dedicated ER operating room with Ligasure, GIA, and TA stapling devices, a modernized bright isolation ward that is negatively pressurized, and additional imaging such as a 16‑slice CT, hyperbaric oxygen chamber, MRI, and a blood bank scheduled to arrive in late 2025. Position Overview The Emergency Director assists the Medical Director and Hospital Director with the organization and direction of clinical operations and administration, ensuring high‑quality medicine and outstanding client experience. The role is designed to maintain a 75% clinical and 25% administrative split, with a proposed schedule of two 12‑hour clinical days per week and two 6‑hour admin days per week; remote admin shifts may be supported after a six‑month onboarding period. Qualifications • 5+ years of veterinary practice experience (leadership preferred) • Internship training or 2+ years of emergency experience in a specialty hospital setting • DVM (or equivalent) with Maryland state licensure, DEA and Controlled Substance Licensure required • Clinical shift coverage includes day, swing, overnight, weekend, and holiday shifts • ER surgical experience mandatory Clinical Duties The candidate will triage, receive, and provide inpatient care, handling a diverse and interesting caseload. The ER team routinely performs soft‑tissue procedures, and additional surgical training will be provided as needed. Responsibilities Provide leadership and guidance to the emergency veterinary team Exemplify and instill Ethos culture and core values at all times Ensure medicine is delivered in compliance with federal, state, and local regulatory agency requirements Advise on policies and procedures for best‑practice clinical operations and efficient use of staff Assist in addressing client and RDVM medical review needs; investigate, discuss, and resolve case reviews Help develop, implement, and maintain procedures and processes that improve operations, workflow, medical quality, client service, and charge capture Support communication with clients via phone, email, and in‑person meetings as needed Provide clinical mentoring and coaching to veterinarians and technicians Support DVM onboarding, relief scheduling, and recruitment Offer coaching and feedback via 1:1 meetings with doctors and during shifts Ensure efficiency and monitor caseload per shift Review finances (production, labor costs, invoices, discounts, CE compliance, pricing structure) Manage doctor and technician team relationships Provide technical support for the blood bank Assist Medical Director with doctor quarterly and annual reviews Partner on intra‑service relationships and needs Review equipment needs Attend Ethos company trainings and community team events as required Benefits and Salary All staff veterinarians receive uniform allowances, short and long‑term disability, employee‑owned pet discounts, opportunities for professional development and continuing education, membership and licensing dues, PLIT, and PTO. The compensation model is ProSal, with a base salary range of $140,000 to $185,000 for experienced ER veterinarians, and earning potential of $230,000 to $350,000 when factoring in production. There is no negative accrual. The MDVM role includes an additional administrative stipend of $40,000 to $60,000 depending on leadership experience.
