The Grant Writer is responsible for supporting the Director of Grants in the identification, development, preparation and coordination of grant proposals in support of the College's mission. Additionally, the Grant Writer is responsible for researching and drafting materials supporting in the writing, managing, and reporting of the portfolio as directed.

Typical Work Activities


1. Drafts, prepares, and edits materials to include proposal and report writing for various funding sources for final review and submission by the Director of Grants.

2. Researches potential funding opportunities and matches them with campus and system needs. Meets with faculty, staff, funding sources, or administration as assigned by Director of Grants in the development of grant proposals.

3. Researches, writes, edits and coordinates the development of grant materials for federal, state, local and private grantors as assigned. Researches and compiles listings of potential grant sources to match internal needs as assigned.

4. Drafts grant budget templates in accordance with College policies and procedures and funder guidelines. Assists the Director of Grants in preparing, editing, finalizing, and submitting grant budget materials as assigned.

5. Utilizes online submission portals, such as Grants.gov, Research.gov, and other entities to download templates, draft materials for review and submission, and review programmatic guidelines.

6. As assigned, organizes and coordinates the work of proposal teams, which may include both internal and external members.

7. Assists the Director of Grants in maintenance of continued funding for grants received by the College through drafting of required reports, revisions, and materials for review and submission.

8. Maintains awareness of all active grant projects and regularly reviews materials within the Grant database to understand issues of compliance, reporting deadlines, grant agreements, history of the institution, funding needs, and details of intended projects.

9. Participates in regular meetings with grant project coordinators/activity directors to maintain active awareness of ongoing project activities and necessary grant reporting.

10. Understands and applies principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion in writing, editing, and developing meaningful grant projects.

11. Researches relevant data supporting meaningful grant narrative and justification based on the award preferences noted by various funding entities within their guidelines.

12. Performs other duties as assigned.

Essential Functions


Ability to write reports and prepare documents following general guidelines; ability to coordinate numerous projects simultaneously; ability to relate to all constituents of the College as well as local, State, and Federal officials; ability to read and understand Federal and other documents regarding grant proposals; ability to understand and maintain budget documents; ability to operate computers; ability to communicate verbally and in writing.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree
• One (1) year of experience writing grants for submission to federal, state, and/or private sectors.

Desirable Qualifications

• Master's degree;
• At least two (2) years of experience writing grants for submission to federal and/or state agencies;
• Experience writing grants in an academic environment;
• Experience monitoring grants;
• Experience managing grant budgets.
• Understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and personnel, including those with physical or learning disabilities.
