Hospital for Special Care is seeking a compassionate and skilled Licensed Nurse Practitioner (PNP) or Physician Assistant with pediatric experience to join our 28-bed pediatric unit in our chronic disease and specialty care hospital. POSITION HIGHLIGHTS :
- Provide direct care to pediatric patients with complex and chronic medical conditions.
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team including physicians, nurses, therapists, and specialists.
- Manage patient assessments, treatment planning, and family education.
- Participate in care coordination and quality initiatives focused on long-term, specialty pediatric care.

QUALIFICATIONS
- Required: Master's Degree in Nursing with a defined clinical specialty or completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program.
- Required: Minimum of five years' experience in related clinical practice with demonstrated leadership and teaching skills.
- Required: Current licensure or eligible for licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant in the State of Connecticut.
- Required: Passed the State of Connecticut approved Pharmacology course required in Master's Degree Program.
- Required: DEA and CT Controlled Substance Registrations.
- Required: Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
- Job requires sitting/working at a desk and those functions associated with clinical tasks (reaching, bending and stretching to access drawers, records, shelves).
- Job involves carrying of documents, medical records, books, occasionally small equipment and medical procedures based on clinical specialties of the role, i.e. endoscopic care, intravenous and medication delivery systems, specialty authorizations, wound ostomy and fistula management. Fine manipulation is required for writing as well as some type of patient care techniques.
- Job requires visual/perceptive skills to perform above tasks. Job requires functional use of both upper/lower extremities.
- Job requires movement related to walking and standing, fine and gross manipulation related to these activities. May occasionally require pushing and pulling of up to 50 pounds, frequent bending, occasional squatting, kneeling, reaching forward and above shoulders, and twisting.
- Job requires independent problem identification, abstract reasoning, adaptability to work environments and quick decision making. A high degree of selective attention, discernment, perception and concentration are necessary.
- Job requires the ability to interpret physical findings, laboratory results and subjective complaints in determination of an accurate and complete differential diagnosis, assessment strategy, and treatment plan in collaboration with the appropriate physician.
- Job requires the ability to set appropriate priorities and accurately triage clinical problems.
- Tasks require legibility, spelling accuracy, logical sentence and paragraph organization. A working knowledge of, and familiarity with, professional (medical) terms and definitions is required.
- Job requires a high level of communication skills including the expression of abstract/complex ideas, use of negotiation and active listening, and the ability to dialogue with multiple parties is necessary.
- Job requires the ability to comprehend lengthy and complex messages, or paragraphs, and to follow multi-stage and three step commands.
- Job requires the ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide with all units of measure including decimal fractions, compute ratio, rate and percent, draw bar graphs, perform basic arithmetic operations involving American monetary units.
- Job requires high level of independent judgement and ability to function effectively during periods which may be stressful.
- Job requires working primarily indoors and interdependently with others.
- Conditions are often noisy with frequent exposure to odors and/or body fluids/blood borne pathogens.
- Job requires occasionally being on-call and/or responding to emergency situations.
- Performs complete history and physical examinations upon admission, annually including pre-operative assessment.
- Provides assessment, triage and therapeutic management of patients' needs. Requests appropriate consults as needed.
- Orders and/or obtains all appropriate laboratory, radiological, and specialized tests to evaluate patients.
- Implements care plans in collaboration with clinical team.
- Consults with patient, family and, as needed, appropriately qualified physician on care plans. Provides patient/family counseling and education.
- Assists during procedures as privledged.
- Provides accurate and timely documentation of all clinical interventions in a clear and objective manner.
- Participates and identifies opportunities for improvement in patient care and outcome during daily practice, special projects and per review activities
- Performs other duties as assigned as related to the PNP/PA role
