Position Title Assistant District Attorney – Juvenile Division - District 23 Location Pottawatomie County, Shawnee, Oklahoma Lincoln County, Chandler, Oklahoma Status Full-Time, Exempt, Immediate Opening Closing Open until filled Salary Commensurate with applicable experience and qualifications Benefits Full State of Oklahoma benefits, including generous monthly allowance for health coverage, paid sick and vacation leave earned monthly. Position Summary DISTRICT 23 is seeking one Assistant District Attorney for the prosecution of juvenile cases, to include but not limit to Juvenile Deprived, Juvenile Delinquent, and Youthful Offender, for the Pottawatomie and Lincoln County Offices of the District Attorney. The Assistant District Attorney – Juvenile (Juvenile ADA) is an Assistant District Attorney under the general supervision of the District Attorney for the 23rd Judicial District of Oklahoma. The Juvenile ADA represents the State of Oklahoma under the elected District Attorney in the various juvenile courts in Pottawatomie County and Lincoln County. The Juvenile ADA is an employee of the State of Oklahoma and serves at the pleasure of the District Attorney; to protect the public through proactively advocating as ministers of justice for public safety and welfare. Minimum Requirements and Qualifications Juris Doctorate from accredited law school. Admitted to and in good standing with Oklahoma Bar Association license to practice in OK. Familiarity with the practice of juvenile law strongly preferred. Possess excellent oral advocacy, legal analysis and legal writing and editing skills. Display strong organizational, interpersonal communication, problem solving and teamwork skills. Knowledge of applicable state and federal statutes and regulations; constitutional law and the Oklahoma constitution; regulatory policies and procedures; trial and hearing procedures; rules of evidence; various techniques for conducting investigations; methods and techniques for performing legal research; and communication, both oral and written. Excellent communication skills and the ability to foster a positive, collaborative working environment. Ability to prioritize time sensitive matters and ensure all deadlines are met. Self-starter with the following attributes: sharp attention to detail, ability to exercise discretion with confidential information, ability to contribute and work as part of a team, positive attitude, and willingness to learn new processes and adapt to new guidelines as needed. Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation. Preference to live within one of the two counties in District 23 (Lincoln or Pottawatomie). Duties and Responsibilities Represent the State of Oklahoma at all stages of criminal prosecution in Juvenile Court for juvenile cases in Lincoln and Pottawatomie County. This includes, but is not limited to: Handling arraignments and corresponding motions Conducting pre-trial hearings, conferences and litigating evidentiary and non-evidentiary motions such as motions for discovery and motions to suppress. Handling trials (bench and jury) as lead counsel, including trials transferred from other locations for jury trial. Work closely with colleagues, victim witness advocates, law enforcement, court personnel, defense attorneys, criminal justice agencies, community partners, and the public to ensure successful, holistic approach to prosecution that balances the safety and well-being of the victims, juveniles, and communities we serve. Attend meetings with our community and law enforcement partners. Review charging decisions made by law enforcement agencies to make appropriate recommendations and changes as needed. Meet with victim families, direct investigatory efforts, partner on forensic interviews and provide updates to the District Attorney, Juvenile Defense Attorneys, OJA, DHS, and other supervising ADAs or partnering agencies as needed or requested. Review evidentiary reports, identify, and interview victims and witnesses, prepare discovery, and provide discovery to defense counsel. Review case files, applicable statutes and case law, victim information and input, and determine an appropriate recommendation for case resolution. Conference the same with defense counsel. Keep abreast of court decisions and legislation affecting Oklahoma law and prepare written memoranda where appropriate. Understand applicable rules, laws, and guidelines, including the mandates of the Victims’ Bill of Rights. Interact with victims, juveniles, families, and witnesses with kindness and professionalism. Ability to manage crises and excel in high-stress, dynamic, and fast-paced environment while exhibiting a calm, professional demeanor. Occasionally appear in the adult sessions of their courthouse as needed. Occasionally travel to other district court locations to handle juvenile and/or adult matters as needed. To be familiar with and to follow the provisions of the District 23 District Attorney’s Office Personnel Policies and Accounting Policies. To participate in trainings relevant to Office functions. Collaborate with peers to maximize productivity and produce the highest outcomes. To communicate with or provide timely notification to Office staff, police, and other interested parties, as permitted and/or required by law. To interact in a respectful and professional manner with the public, judicial and law enforcement personnel, and Office staff. To complete work assignments in a timely manner. To complete general administrative duties to include, filing, faxing, photocopying, etc. Perform any other duties at any jobsite as may from time to time be assigned to her/him by the District Attorney, or the First Assistant District Attorney or other designee of the District Attorney. Physical Demands Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time. Lift boxes up to 20 lbs. Travel This position will be responsible for all juvenile cases in Lincoln and Pottawatomie County, therefore there will be weekly required travel to the Pottawatomie District Courthouse in Shawnee, OK and the Lincoln County District Courthouse in Chandler, OK. Occasional other local travel to various sites, including courthouses and offsite agencies.
