The role focuses on high and medium voltage transmission projects in NYSEG and RGE service territories and involves developing drawings, specifications, and construction work orders, supporting design, construction, and commissioning of electrical equipment. Substation designs include structural, grading, electrical clearance calculations, routing, and engineering drawings. The Engineer also supports concrete and steel designs on transmission and distribution line projects originating from the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) efforts in New York State. The position reports to the Unit Manager and works day‑to‑day in a cross‑functional project team. Key Responsibilities Capital project engineering performance: scoping, budgeting, conceptual engineering, contract management, design, construction, and closeout. Lead and create new conceptual designs; oversee work of external detailed designers. Perform field circuit reviews based on project scope and identify proposed improvements. Identify and perform special projects and studies that innovate solutions with broad business impact. Develop innovative alternate methods or design concepts to resolve unique problems or improve processes/services. Solve complex engineering problems, identify innovative solutions. Oversee engineering studies to evaluate equipment and system performance and support reliability and operational efficiency. Validate information needed for engineering analyses and apply engineering judgment to solve technical problems. Ensure all designs meet applicable company, local, state, and national codes and standards. Represent the company on regional and national committees when needed. Utilize knowledge to influence and guide department engineers. Provide technical leadership in complex projects with wide departmental impact. Mentor, develop, and support team in technical skills. Collaborate across departments as a technical subject matter expert liaison and direct contractors on company policy, standards, and best practices. Work independently with little supervision. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in civil or electrical engineering. 7+ years of experience in project delivery or related field. Relevant network construction and operational experience, including field inspections. Theoretical engineering knowledge in planning, operations, design, analytics, modeling & calculation, and business modeling. Practical engineering experience in planning, operations, design, construction, field standardization, economic analysis and business case development. Ability to document and interpret engineering documentation. Ability to review and approve engineering work to ensure compliance with company standards, specifications, and contract requirements. Knowledge of regulatory and compliance environment – local, state, and federal standards. Preferred Qualifications Professional Engineering License. Excellent diagnostic and problem‑solving skills for complex technical and analytical problems. Proven ability to lead and manage projects. Strong communication and interpersonal skills for articulating highly technical concepts. Strong management and leadership skills to drive change and adopt new technologies. Knowledge of regulatory environment and incentive mechanisms. Commercial and regulatory awareness to balance customer service and project delivery for maximum ROI. Track record of stakeholder and customer service engagement and management. Ability to communicate and present information effectively at all levels. Ability to manage competing priorities using engineering and financial judgment. Awareness and understanding of key business drivers. Ability to devise solutions to common and complex challenges. Relevant technical or operational experience in a utility environment. Knowledge of engineering standards and specifications up to 345 kV.
