Staff Veterinarian

HSSC is searching for a Staff Veterinarian to provide on‑site medical care and spay/neuter services to our shelter animals and is comfortable in a fast‑paced environment. Candidates must be comfortable with pediatric spay/neuter, in heat spays, pregnant spays, feral cat spay/neuter, large dog surgeries, as well as other medical procedures. In addition, HSSC occasionally houses small animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, and birds, so some experience with small animals is preferred. Responsibilities Examine and treat a variety of illnesses and injuries. Perform spay/neuter surgeries (HQHVSN experience a plus). Conduct diagnostic testing. Communicate medical plans and ensure follow‑up care for shelter animals. Adhere to contagious disease protocols. Perform occasional euthanasia. Keep thorough medical records. Provide input on and update medical protocols. Manage a staff of four (including one part‑time veterinarian) and stay within budgetary guidelines by using effective and efficient medical judgement. Qualifications Must possess a DVM degree and be licensed (or have the ability to obtain a license) to practice in the State of Wisconsin. Must possess (or have the ability to obtain) DEA licensure for controlled substances. Previous shelter medicine and HQHVSN surgery experience preferred. Must be a team player with extraordinary communication and problem‑solving skills, and have a passion for both animals and people. Must adhere to and maintain the established standards in accordance with shelter and state policy, and help our animals stay as comfortable as possible while in our care, in accordance with the duties or limitations set by the Wisconsin Veterinary Examining Board.
