Summary: Responsible for providing technical support and safety assistance within the Transportation Maintenance Department. This role is designed for Engineering or Diesel Technology students to assist in the execution of the Summer Preventative Maintenance (PM) schedule. The intern assists certified mechanics with vehicle inspections, data logging, and shop safety protocols while gaining professional-grade experience in fleet diagnostics and maintenance operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Safety Pairing: Serves as the required "second set of eyes" for hazardous shop operations, including under-chassis inspections, oil pit services, and road-call assistance.
• Preventative Maintenance Support: Assists Certified Mechanics with the mandatory summer PM cycle, including fluid changes, tire rotations, brake inspections, and light-system checks.
• Data & Metrics: Performs real-time digital entry of repair start/stop times and parts usage to ensure accurate department reporting and SOP compliance.
• Shop Standards: Maintains tool inventory and ensures the service station and oil pit remain compliant with OSHA and District safety standards.
• Technical Diagnostics: Utilizes engineering or technical background to assist in identifying mechanical failures and shadowing Leadermen during complex engine or transmission diagnostics.
• Professional Discipline: Adheres to all shop notification protocols, including the requirement that all leave be requested and approved at least 24 hours in advance.
• Regulatory Compliance: Ensures all work performed meets the safety standards mandated by State Law and East Baton Rouge Parish School System policies.

Essential Functions/Qualifications/Requirements: Education and Experience: Must be a currently enrolled student in an accredited Engineering, Diesel Technology, or related technical degree program. Preference is given to applicants with experience on competitive university racing teams (e.g., Formula SAE) or similar high-precision mechanical environments. Must demonstrate proficiency in mechanical troubleshooting and technical data entry.

Work is performed in a non-climate-controlled maintenance shop environment and involves exposure to heavy machinery, automotive fluids, and loud noises. Technological Abilities: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be proficient in general use of a computer, the use of Email as a form of communication, and other job-specific equipment, software, and/or applications for digital repair logging.
