The ICU Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Manager is a valued member of the intensive care team and is a working leader who has coordination and clinical skills required for the comprehensive management of critical care medicine patients. As the APP Manager, they will provide guidance and oversight to a defined team of APPs working in the Cardiothoracic Critical Care Unit, while also working clinically as an APP. The Manager will evaluate and manage patients while also managing the schedule, providing basic clinical oversight and bi-directional communication of operational priorities.

As an APP, the Manager will demonstrate specialized skills in the care of patients and families undergoing operative and other invasive procedures. The Manager coordinates involvement of medical/surgical specialty teams, practicing in a collaborative environment necessary to develop a comprehensive plan for the patient. Reviews the plan of care with the other members of the clinical team, participates in directing that care. The provider will work with the team to ensure adherence to protocol requirements and regulatory guidelines contributing to excellence in patient care, research, teaching, and leadership to the organization and profession. They will perform diagnostic/therapeutic procedures; peri-procedural services, and coordinate discharge planning to next level of care (as applicable).

Fair Labor Standards Act Status: Salaried/ Exempt

Hours per week: Full Time Shift Work– hours per week vary

Scheduled Work Hours/Shift: 14 (13-hour) shifts a month which includes nights, weekends and holiday coverage on a rotating schedule. Administrative time of 40% of total time (16 hours/week or shift equivalent) will be dedicated to the Manager role.

Required Minimum Training and Experience Training
Current licensure as a Physician Assistant or currently licensed as an APRN as noted below. Two years of experience as an APP and/or experience in a managerial or leadership role is required.

 

• AGACNP/ACNP (Adult Gerontology Acute Care NP/Acute Care Nurse Practitioner): Adult pts (13 years to death), acutely ill or injured, potentially unstable, or technologically dependent (vents, drips, monitors, etc.)
• AGPNP/ANP (Adult Gerontology Primary Care NP or Adult NP): Adult pts (13 years to death), stable chronic disease state management or primary care setting.
• FNP (Family NP): (birth to death) Stable chronic disease state management, primary care across the lifespan.

 

All applicants must also possess:

• Basic Life Support (BLS).
• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
• DHEC and DEA license applications

Preferred Experience: At least 1 year of critical care experience as an NP/PA-C is preferred.

Job Duties:

 

40% APP Manager Duties:

• Responsible for OurDay Manager tasks, such as PTO approval, annual evaluations, etc.
• Conduct APP interviews and record progress in OurDay, partner with department leadership and HR for job offer/salary quotes.
• Perform 30/60/90/120 day evaluations with physician and/or department leadership, along with perform 1:1 with APPs on a regular basis
• Complete performance evaluations with physician and/or department leadership
• Hold monthly meetings with APPs using BPC Meeting template and send to team.
• Attend 80% of APP Manager/Lead meetings held by APP BPC (second Monday of the month, 4:30-5:15pm on Teams)
• Attend department faculty/staff meetings and cascade information to APP team
• Manage schedule coverage if applicable
• Ensure Transition to Practice document is given to new APP hires
• Work with physician/department leadership to ensure compliance with annual mandatories or other compliance-related requirements
• Coordinate APP student rotations for both internal and external students, coordinate APP fellow rotations if applicable.
• Assist with APRN Practice Agreements and PA Scope of Practice documents to ensure compliance with state boards and MUSC Credentialing.
• Develop and implement any new initiatives involving APPs in conjunction with the APP Best Practice Center.
• Assist in coaching and facilitating the development, support, and management of the APRN/PA group within the department. This includes corrective actions and terminations as necessary.
• Develop staffing systems which respond effectively and quickly to changes in patient volume, acuity or service demands.

 

60% APP Clinical Duties:

• Provides direct care to patients through the following activities:
• Takes comprehensive history and performs physical examinations
• Evaluates and treats on the basis of history, physical examination, radiological, laboratory, and other diagnostic test results pursuant to the practice agreement or scope of practice guideline
• Performs the following therapeutic procedures in accordance with procedural privileges, skill and proficiency as approved by the Clinical Division Chief. The Nurse Practitioner will assist/perform the following, but NOT limited to:
  • • Lumbar Puncture
    • Central Venous line placement
    • Pulmonary Artery Catheterization
    • Arterial line placement
    • Endotracheal Intubation
    • Chest Tube placement
    • Bronchoscopy
    • thoracentesis
    • paracentesis
    • perform suturing/stapling, and removal of catheters/tubes/drains as needed.
• Initiates referrals to other health care providers, and/or consults with the attending physician or the collaborating physician
• Potential to first assist in the operating room
• Documents and bills for direct care provided
• Utilizes current research and evidence-based decision-making in all clinical practice
• Performs and participates in quality/performance improvement activities and clinical research
• Participates in and supports accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities of the organization
• Demonstrates responsibility for professional practice through active participation in professional organizations and continuing education
• Potential to precept students at MUSC enrolled as an advanced practice provider student; and facilitates the learning of other new team members
• APRN or PA must maintain licenses, certifications, CNEs/CMEs, etc. as required by applicable policies and state law

 

 

Physical Requirements

Continuous requirements are to perform job functions while standing, walking and sitting. Ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, fully use both hands and legs, possess good finger dexterity, perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, reach in all directions. Ability to be qualified physically for respirator use, initially and as required. Maintain 20/40 vision corrected, see and recognize objects close at hand and at a distance, work in a latex safe environment and work indoors. Frequently lift, lower, push and pull and/or carry objects weighing 50 lbs (+/-) unassisted, exert up to 50 lbs of force, lift from 36" to overhead 25 lbs. Infrequently work in dusty areas and confined/cramped spaces.  

Additional Job Description

Minimum Required Education and Experience: 1 year experience within current role (internal MUSC only). Required Licenses/Certifications/Registrations: Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program and currently licensed or completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program and currently licensed.Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification is required
