Wildlife Biologist

Summary The Wildlife Biologist serves as staff biologist interacting in a technical and representational capacity with USDA/APHIS Veterinary Services, Marketing and Regulatory Programs, U.S. Department of Interior, International Services, tribal councils, state wildlife and agricultural departments, and numerous universities and other organizations on issues involving emergency response, research, and disease monitoring. - The duties may include, but are not limited to:
- Provides technical expertise, advice, and support for the National Wildlife Disease Program (NWDP), regarding disease activities related to emergency response, and disease surveillance.
- Oversight and management of disease projects include the design, implementation, and review of projects.
- Serves on scientific advisory panels and boards, and at the request of the Program Manager, represents the National Disease Program on various emergency preparedness and response assignments.
- Develops training programs for WS personnel and cooperating state and federal agency personnel working on wildlife disease activities.
- Determine the types of logistical and personnel support for wildlife disease and emergency management activities.
- Develops and maintains documents required by NWDP, prepares required scientific and administrative reports, and provides technical guidance to biologists technicians, and students.
- Provides general and technical supervision and consultation on emergency management problems relating to assigned commodity area.

- All USDA employees are required to be enrolled in Continuous Vetting, which authorizes government agencies to receive notifications of criminal activity on individuals who hold low risk, public trust, or national security positions.
- Incumbents must be able to comply with both Federal and State statutory requirements to possess and use firearms in the performance of their duties and must maintain state-mandated firearm use certification requirements.
- At least 9 semester hours in such wildlife subjects as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, wildlife management, or research courses in the field of wildlife biology; and
- At least 12 semester hours in zoology in such subjects as general zoology, invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, genetics, ecology, cellular biology, parasitology, entomology, or research courses in such subjects (Excess courses in wildlife biology may be used to meet the zoology requirements where appropriate.); and
- At least 9 semester hours in botany or the related plant sciences.
- Experience conducting wildlife damage management activities and research that informs recommendations to resolve controversial problems.
- Coordinating efforts and working with managers of other federal agencies and state and local agencies in reaching wildlife damage management program goals.
- Coordinating multiple projects and numerous facets of large projects, and to prioritize work for themselves and co-workers to complete multiple tasks of varying complexities and durations.
- Developing logistical and personnel support for wildlife disease and emergency management activities.
- Developing and delivering training programs to ensure staff are prepared for emergency response situations.
- This position requires specific coursework or a degree in a specific field to be basically qualified.
- This education must have been successfully completed and obtained from an accredited school, college, or university.

- First time hires to the federal government normally start at the lowest rate of the salary range for the grade selected.
