Laboratory Technician
BioTalent
Lab Technician - Assay Development (Contract)
Position Summary
We are seeking a hands-on Laboratory Technician to support molecular assay development activities in a fast-paced research and development environment. This bench-focused contract role is responsible for executing routine and development-stage laboratory workflows, including reagent and sample preparation, plate-based assays, surface-hybridization workflows, fluorescence-based detection, and operation of laboratory instrumentation.
The ideal candidate is highly detail-oriented, comfortable performing repetitive and high-throughput laboratory work, and capable of executing protocols accurately and consistently. This individual will collaborate closely with scientists to support assay development experiments and daily laboratory operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine laboratory activities including manual pipetting, reagent and master mix preparation, sample preparation, dilution series, and transfer of materials into plates, tubes, and other assay vessels.
- Execute established experimental protocols and assist with optimization of molecular assay workflows under the guidance of assay development scientists.
- Support surface-hybridization and fluorescence-based assay workflows.
- Operate laboratory instrumentation, including plate readers, fluorescence microscopy systems, and related equipment, to generate experimental data.
- Support PCR/qPCR workflows and nucleic acid extraction activities as needed.
- Prepare samples, reagents, controls, standards, and assay components for experimental studies.
- Accurately document experimental procedures, observations, and results in laboratory documentation systems.
- Perform basic data review and quality checks, escalating unusual results, assay failures, or process issues when identified.
- Maintain inventory of reagents, consumables, and assay materials, and assist with ordering as needed.
- Support additional laboratory and assay development activities as project requirements evolve.
Required Qualifications
- Strong hands-on laboratory skills, including manual pipetting, reagent preparation, and plate-based assay execution.
- Ability to follow SOPs and laboratory protocols accurately and consistently.
- Familiarity with molecular assays and fluorescence-based detection techniques.
- Experience operating laboratory instrumentation and automated or semi-automated equipment.
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, documentation practices, and troubleshooting abilities.
- Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, fast-paced R&D environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with PCR/qPCR workflows.
- Experience performing nucleic acid extraction.
- Familiarity with fluorescence detection technologies.
- Experience supporting surface-hybridization assays.
- Previous experience in biotechnology, molecular diagnostics, or related laboratory environments.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or a related scientific discipline preferred.
- 1-4 years of hands-on laboratory experience, preferably within biotechnology, molecular diagnostics, or a related field.
