Description The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Department of Med - Pulmonary/Allergy/Critical Care, is seeking a Clinical Research Coordinator III. General Responsibilities To serve as a lead coordinator by providing oversight to less experienced staff to ensure quality and regulatory compliance with clinical research operations. To coordinate and manage the research study lifecycle from start-up through close-out. To coordinate and conduct all applicable clinical and administrative activities required by the protocol such as screening, scheduling, consenting, assessing, ordering, collecting, documenting and shipping under the auspices of Good Clinical Practice (GCP). Key Duties & Responsibilities Independently manages all aspects of the life cycle of each study from start-up through trial maintenance to closure. Manages participant care for their assigned studies including recruitment, screening, scheduling, consenting, conducting visits, and collecting various assessments such as adverse event (AE) information or questionnaires. Documents and reviews medical history to determine compliance with eligibility requirements. Performs the informed consent process following GCP. In collaboration with others, as needed, completes and submits Adverse Event (AE) and Serious Adverse Event (SAE) reports in a timely manner and in compliance with FDA, sponsor, and institutional policies. Reports Safety, clinical care, and/or study conduct issues to the appropriate parties. Performs clinical procedures as required by the protocol. Prepares for and participates in study monitoring visits and corrects and reports findings as needed. Processes and ships various specimens collected from study participants. Administers or distributes investigational medications to study participants within the confines of the study protocol and institutional policy. Assesses study workflows, source documentation practices, and operational processes to ensure alignment with protocol requirements, participant safety standards, data integrity principles, Good Clinical Practice (GCP), FDA regulations, and institutional policies. Recommends and implements process improvements to enhance study quality, efficiency, and compliance. Provides guidance, training, and operational support to less experienced research staff in accordance with protocol requirements, departmental procedures, and Good Clinical Practice (GCP). May assist with the development of documents related to participant safety and security. May provide input on research protocols, including study feasibility. Performs other duties as assigned. Annual Salary Range $60,835 - $98,855 Qualifications Bachelor's degree in a related field and five (5) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement. Certified Clinical Research Coordinator (CCRC) or Certified Clinical Research Professional (CCRP) certification preferred. Preferences Preferred Hard Skills: Clinical research experience with industry-sponsored clinical trials. Collection, processing, and shipping of human specimens (blood, urine, sputum, etc.) Working knowledge of medical terminology, clinical documentation, and healthcare workflows. Experience performing or supporting clinical procedures such as obtaining vital signs, ECGs, pulmonary function testing, specimen collection, or other protocol-required assessments. Foundational knowledge of patient care principles and clinical assessments obtained through clinical research, nursing, respiratory therapy, dietetics, medical assisting, patient care technology, or other healthcare-related experience. Preferred Soft Skills: Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to independently manage multiple studies, competing priorities, and deadline-driven tasks. Demonstrated initiative and resourcefulness, including the ability to independently identify and utilize available training materials, procedures, and resources to resolve routine issues while recognizing situations that require timely consultation or escalation. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively interact with participants, investigators, clinical staff, sponsors, CROs, and multidisciplinary teams. Demonstrated professionalism, accountability, initiative, and attention to detail, including proactively seeking additional responsibilities, training opportunities, and solutions to operational challenges. Leadership and mentoring skills, including the ability to support, train, and guide less experienced research staff while fostering a collaborative and quality-focused research environment.
