Responsibilities
Schedule:
8 hour shifts. Sunday – Saturday from 0600-1800 hours, including holidays
Core Duties:
• Independently prepare patients, exam rooms, and procedure tables using techniques which are categorized as dirty, clean, sterile, or aseptic.
• Sets up and operates the imaging equipment (angiographic imaging systems, CT, ultrasound) to best present the medically significant aspects found if unanticipated conditions or anomalies are discovered.
• Performs complex and highly specialized duties of the IR technologist, assisting in all aspects of procedures, to include handling specific equipment, preparing and utilizing procedure specific supplies, medications, and devices.
• Serves as primary assistant to the Interventional Radiologist, performing complex and highly specialized IR procedures that include diagnostic and interventional arterial/venous procedures (eg. Transarterial chemoembolization, uterine fibroid embolization, pelvic congestion syndrome embolization, gonadal vein embolization, thrombolysis, thrombectomy, percutaneous, transluminal angioplasty, implantation of stents and other intravascular devices, fistulagram/shuntogram, transjugular intrahepatic portal systemic shunt, and foreign body removal) and non-vascular interventional procedures (e.g. gastrointestinal studies, urinary studies, drainage studies, biopsies).
• Ability to function as the primary circulator during all cases.
• Prepares, organizes, and maintains highly complex sterile surgical set-ups. Observes and responds promptly to each stage of the procedure and anticipates the needs of the IR. Utilizes universal precautions and follows infection control policies and procedures when handling specimens, supplies, and equipment. Maintains adequate stock of sterile instruments; ensures instruments are cleaned and re-sterilized following procedures. Maintains an adequate stock of linen and informs the supervisor if they notice any shortage of supplies.
• Keeps a clean and orderly room at all times.
• Responsibilities include performing clerical duties, such as the triage and scheduling of patients after reviewing requests from physicians and other health care providers. Calls for, receives, and explains procedures to all patients. Prioritizes the critical and emergency procedures, and rearranges patient schedules to accommodate them. Retrieves pertinent lab results to ensure patients meet criteria to proceed with the examination. Ensures all paperwork correlating to the patient is reviewed for accuracy such as H&P (history and physical) to include allergies, medications, lab values and any medical problems, prior studies and reports, OHI (other health insurance).
• Assists in the training of students and other military technologists in IR principles, procedures, capabilities, techniques, and equipment.
• Performs operator level maintenance and care of equipment. Identifies need for and initiates action to obtain higher level support.
• Assists in workload statistics and other records relating to IR activities and functions.
• On a rotational basis, stands call for the angiographic and interventional studies needed after normal duty hours.
• Existing guidelines are not specifically applicable to all aspects of the assignment, as the technology is continually evolving, and new techniques will be applied as they are published through textbooks and current journals. The technologist must be able adjust techniques for observed physiological and anatomical conditions and use judgment to deviate from procedures and tables provided to compensate for patient's injuries, illness, or physical disabilities. The technologist must maintain up-to-date knowledge of developments in the field of IR radiology in order to follow new methods and guidelines for adoption.
• Requires long periods of standing and walking, to include bending, lifting and carrying moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs). Positioning patients who are unconscious or disabled requires considerable effort and working in awkward positions. Occasionally, the lifting of totally incapacitated patients may require heavy lifting with assistance from fellow employees. Requires frequent physical movement for room and equipment setup during cases and between cases.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Additional Duties:
• Receive patients and explain procedures, providing humane and appropriate care and communication to alleviate fear of examination. Correctly position the patient for the examination and adjust as necessary for the required examination. Determine if any special patient preparation is required.
• Operate Sonography/Ultrasonography equipment (scanners, linear/sector/endovaginal probes, pulse/color Doppler, PACS equipment) as per manufacturer recommendations and the radiology department protocols.
• Receive and interpret requests or instructions for diagnostic ultrasound scans; perform daily warm up and assign quality control checks of the ultrasound scanners.
• Explain process to patient and instructs and assists patient in assuming physical position for examination.
• Key test data and patient information into computer of ultrasound equipment to maintain record of test results.
• Perform a full range of diagnostic ultrasonic examinations to include but not limited to:
• Obstetrical sonography - imaging of all fetal anatomy in order to obtain accurate dating and growth parameters and evaluate for fetal abnormalities and problems with pregnancy.
• Pelvic sonography imaging of all pelvic anatomy to attain accurate assessment of suspected pathology; abdominal sonography - imaging of all major organs within the abdominal and retroperitoneal spaces (the HCW will assist in any interventional techniques and localize ascites for paracentesis, as required).
• Endovaginal sonography. Perform endovaginal exams to obtain accurate assessment of suspected pelvic pathology.
• Abdomen sonography-evaluate abdomen organs, muscles and soft tissue (i.e., Liver, pancreas, gallbladder, kidneys, spleen, bladder, appendix, arteries and veins, document vascular flow with spectral and color flow doppler)
• Thoracic sonography - localize area of pleural effusion for thoracentesis.
• Small Parts Sonography - imaging of the scrotum, breast, cervical regions, thyroid gland and superficial soft tissues of skin and muscle.
• Pediatric sonography - Evaluate all neonatal and pediatric anatomy (i.e., Neonatal head/brain, abdomen, appendix, intussusception, spine, pelvis, hips, soft tissue, and vascular interrogation)
• Vascular sonography-. Be familiar with and utilize Doppler signals for spectral analysis in evaluation of arterial and venous diseases (i.e., carotid arteries, upper and lower extremity deep venous thrombosis).
• Intraoperative sonography. Assist with intraoperative abdominal, pelvic, small parts and vascular ultrasound studies.
• Identify abnormalities during testing and determine need for additional scans of affected area.
• Recognize anatomic variants and determine which other area(s) of the body should be scanned. Use a detailed understanding of diseases of anatomy to accomplish effective ultrasound scanning.
• Advise the radiologist of results of the examination and provide a preliminary diagnosis. Notify physician of significant scans requiring immediate attention or follow-up.
• Maintain and clean ultrasound equipment on a regular basis in accordance with radiology department standards. Stock and maintain an adequate level of supplies required to perform ultrasound examinations. Recommend necessary repairs when diagnostic quality is degraded.
• Make minor adjustments on equipment. Differentiate artifacts from normal or pathological processes and recognize electronic equipment limitations. Program the examination equipment, set up the machine and scanning techniques to be employed.
• Review new developments in the field by reading journals and attending meetings/conferences when possible and recommend changes to supervisor which would improve the operation of the ultrasound section.
• Recognize situations requiring patient resuscitation due to cardiac or respiratory arrest and institute the necessary emergency measures.
• Use a detailed understanding of diseases of anatomy to accomplish effective ultrasound scanning.
• Notify physician of significant scans requiring immediate attention.
• Recognize the need for and institute the necessary emergency measures for situations where a person requires resuscitation procedures due to the cardiac or respiratory arrest.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications :
• Degree: Associate of Science in Diagnostic Medical Sonography
• Education: Graduate from a college or university accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
• Experience: 2 years of experience. Possess clinical expertise in performing a wide variety of invasive cardiovascular procedures to include Diagnostic right and left heart cardiac catheterization; Interventional cardiac catheterization; Electrophysiology studies, catheter ablation, and cardiac device implantation; Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump insertion and therapy; Transeptal procedures; and Intravascular/Intracardiac ultrasound.
• Certification: Certified by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS)
• Life Support Certification: Possess a current AHA OR ARC BLS Healthcare Provider certification.
• Security : Must possess ability to pass a Government background check/security clearance.
Pay Scale: $60.00 - $66.00 per hour , to be determined based on qualifications, experience, and location.
