Property Tax Assessor-Treasurer

This is a hybrid position requiring a minimum of 2-3 days per week in the office, with additional in-office time as business needs require. During the initial 6-month probationary period, this role will be fully in-office.

As a key point of contact for our Assessor-Treasurer's Office, you'll help community members understand their property taxes and navigate the services we provide. Our team supports the public both in person and over the phone, offering clear information, patient guidance, and great customer service. We pride ourselves on being responsive, accurate, and transparent so taxpayers feel confident about their tax bill and their options.

In this role, you may answer questions about payments, apply adjustments, refunds, appraisals, and valuations. You'll also help taxpayers with property tax reduction applications, making sure all requirements under Washington State law are met.

Work involves reviewing forms and applications for completeness, entering data, performing routine calculations, and following established guidelines and procedures.

The Assessor-Treasurer's Office is responsible for the mass appraisal of real and personal property in Pierce County for purposes of assessing property taxes. Our mission is to fairly and efficiently value property and collect revenue to fund public services throughout Pierce County. Adding over one billion dollars of New Construction value to Pierce County tax rolls each year, we are a team dedicated to serving the citizens of Pierce County. We are looking for someone who takes pride in delivering excellent customer service, follows directions well, and can work both independently and as part of a team. Reliability, strong problem-solving skills, the ability to anticipate needs, and a clear understanding that communication and customer service come first are essential. You should be detail-oriented, accurate, and computer-savvy. Proficiency in multitasking and in Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) is also important.

Throughout the onboarding process, you will meet with the Supervisor, Lead, and the team regularly to discuss expectations, set goals, identify priorities, and gain familiarity with current policies, procedures, and strategic measures. Core daily responsibilities include:

  • Reviews and processes routine property-related forms, applications, and records following established procedures and guidelines, including RCWs, WACs, and County ordinances relevant to Assessor-Treasurer Office services.
  • Performs routine calculations and updates property values and taxes, including adjustments, recalculations, back taxes, refunds, depreciation costs, and supplemental assessments.
  • Assist in determining eligibility for various tax programs or exemptions, or appeals by following established guidelines, and explains decisions to taxpayers.
  • Assists with routine data entry, updates, and maintenance of property and taxpayer information in department databases and systems.

Minimum qualifications include:

  • Additional education or experience may substitute for the recruiting requirements.

  • Two (2) years of experience in clerical, cashiering, and/or regulatory services, must include one (1) year of customer service.

Other job requirements include:

  • Some positions may require field visits and/or public presentations.

  • Vacation (Annual Leave): After approximately six months, employees receive six days of vacation leave. Since we value your experience, the amount of vacation you can accrue increases the longer you work with us. Vacation accrues on a bi-weekly basis for full-time employees as follows: During years 1-3, 12 Days; During years 4-7, 16 Days; During years 8-13, 20 Days; During years 14-18, 23 Days; During years 19, 24 Days; During years 20, 25 Days; During years 21, 26 Days; During years 22, 27 Days; During years 23, 28 Days; During years 24, 29 Days; During years 25 & thereafter, 30 Days. A maximum of 45 days may be carried from one year into the next. Pro-Rated for Part-Time based on % of 1.0 FTE.
